Aidan O'Shea says the August Bank Holiday weekend marks the REAL start of the All-Ireland SFC.

Speaking to the Western People ahead of Mayo's All-Ireland quarter-final against Cork at Croke Park on Sunday, the All Star midfielder said: "It's pure excitement. It's what you've been waiting for all year.

"The football championship only really kicks off on the Bank Holiday weekend, so all the stuff beforehand kind of goes out the window and we get down to business.

"I can't wait for it to be honest. I prefer playing there than playing anywhere else, I'm very comfortable there. It's the best pitch in the country and it has a great atmosphere."

The Breaffy man has mixed memories of Mayo's win over Cork - who were the reigning All-Ireland champions - at the same stage of the championship in 2011.

"The start probably stands out because I was at fault for one of the goals, I took the ball into the tackle and bang, they got a goal straight from it," he recalls.

"I just remember going in at half-time and not panicking. Kevin McLoughlin had got a cracker of a goal before half-time so we were back in the game.

"We shut them out in the second half bar John Miskella's point. It was a massive step for us as a team, in James' (Horan) first year, it was a big scalp at the time."
