Chrissy McKaigue wasn't getting carried away following Derry's league semi-final win over Mayo today.

The Oak Leaf County's full-back - one of the stars of their two-point victory - told TG4: "This is really the first year that we stepped the training up.

"Mayo and Dublin have set the standards in terms of fitness. We're just trying to get there so definitely it's very encouraging but we're well aware that it's very early in the year yet."

The manner in which Brian McIver's side responded to the set-back of losing midfielder Fergal Doherty to a second yellow card in the first half was particularly impressive.

"We have unbelievable camaraderie and team spirit," stated McKaigue who now turns his attention to a league showdown against tje winners of Dublin and Cork.

Has Derry surpassed their own expectations by reaching the decider on their return to the top flight?

"When you look at the league, every team wanted to consolidate their place because how competitive it was.

"Every game was a winnable game and so far we've won most of them so we're not surprised, but we're very aware that we've a long way to go and this is another step in the preparation."
