Gaels hosted St Pats in round 5 of the Division 1 Minor League on Monday night in a very competitive and enjoyable match.

Gaels started the game brightly against a stiff breeze and got the game off to a great start with a point in the first minute from Liam Lynch and this was followed by points from Mark Hannah, Conor Nicholson and Sean McGuire. Pats then got off the mark with three points of their own. Gaels extended their lead with another point from Mark Hannah but then Pats struck on the counter attack to score a goal and take a one point lead. In the lead up to half time the game was well balanced with Pats scoring three more points and Gaels responded with two well taken frees from Paul McCrave leaving the half time score Gaels 0-7, Pats 1-6.

The Gaels started the 2nd half well and scored and early point from half back Conor Nicholson and a free from Liam Lynch. Liam Lynch then scored two more points as momentum moved in the Gaels favour. However Pats responded with a point of their own to close the gap to the minimum and then followed up with their second goal of the game to open up a two point lead. Gaels reacted well to this set back and scored three points without reply from Sean McGuire, a Liam Lynch free and another Lynch point from play. Gaels were ahead again by a point at this stage 0-14 to 2-07. Pats responded with a point to bring the teams level. Gaels defending let them down again with a 3rd goal of the match conceded and Pats went into a three point lead. Gaels responded with two points from Sean McGuire and Liam Lynch but couldn't get the vital score needed to get something out of the game. The Pats finished one point winners on a score of Gaels 0-16, Pats 3-08. Gaels will rue the missed chances they created in the second half particularly several goal opportunities but they battled hard and kept going until the end in a keenly contested match.
