St. Annes too strong for Mattock

April 22, 2015

Louth Senior Camogie League, Round 2
Mattock V St. Anne's - 17th April 2015 in Collon
St. Anne's 3-11
Mattock Rangers 1-06

A strong St. Anne's second half performance proved too strong for Mattock Rangers.
The home team took the lead, courtesy of a Mairead Lynch point however, this was short lived as Denise Moynagh equalised within minutes. It was a very entertaining and evenly contested first half, as both teams play a similar style of camogie with neither side relenting in their pursuit for scores. It was a tight knit affair and both defences were stretched at times and indeed both teams failed to convert some easy scoring chances. St. Anne's took the lead with a Siobhan Dawdry point from a place ball and Moynagh who was causing serious problems for the Collon defence added 1-2 to her tally.  However, the Collon girls kept within reach with 2 points from Mairead Lynch and a Jane McKeon point, leaving the half time score St. Anne's 1-4, Mattock 0-4.
With a three point deficit going into the second half, Mattock needed a good start, and points from Niamh McKeon and Mairead Lynch was encouraging, but a Siobhan Dawdry goal put St. Anne's back in the driving seat. Despite the set-back, Collon prospered for a while, with some well-timed passes edging towards the Togher defence, but were denied access by a defiant Linda Woods, Martina Crehan, Eilish Meaney and ice-cool goalkeeper Leanne Sharkey who coped admirably under incessant pressure. St. Anne's dominated for the remainder of the match as Moynagh knocked over a further 4 points.  The Togher girls continued to pull away as Gillian Sharkey scored a well taken goal, followed by another Dawdry point and 2 points from Clodagh Gill. However, the Collon girls did not give up and it was Jane McKeon who completed the scoring with a last minute goal, but it was too late to threaten a come-back.
There were two noticeable and influential additions to the St. Anne's team. Clodagh Gill who played her previous camogie with St. Brigid's, Co. Westmeath and Eilish Meaney from Ballinkillen, Co. Carlow. Both players had very prominent performances in their first outing.
