Glencarrick GAA Notes

January 12, 2015

Junior selectors Anton Devlin and Finbarr Mooney will again take charge of the second string this year this will be their sixth season at the helm, we hope that promotion will be achieved this season after 5 relegation's in a row, we need to stop the rot although on a positive note relegation cannot be achieved this year as Division 4F is the last division at this grade.

A number of transfers were ratified by the county board on Saturday night, eight players in total and all from Junior clubs within a 10 mile radius of Glencarrick will join us, a big welcome to all of the lads. I believe 6 of the 8 were on the county minor and U21 team last year.

January 15th was a sad day in Glencarrick as it was announced that 47 year old Matt McDonald retired from the game, making his debut in 1984 in the Ranafast cup against Dundalk Rovers, Matt had a distinguished career representing the county on a number of occasions from 1990 - 1995. After he was diagnosed with arthritis in 2003 many thought Matt would hang up the gloves then, but a true warrior that Matt was, Matt continued to play up until last season were he contributed fantastically for the second string, but after a controversial decision in which a referee refused to allow Matt to leave his crutches inside the goals during a recent game, Matt has decided that it's time to hang up his gloves. Although Matt never won a trophy in his 30 years at the club, no one can doubt that Matt will be added to the select list of legends of Glencarrick GAA.

Get well soon to FAS man Patsy Farrell who hurt his back last week, Patsy would like to thank Matt McDonald who has lended his crutches to him, during this painful time.
