LOUTH U16 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
ST FECHINS 2-12 NAOMH MONINNE 2-8
The hurlers of St Fechins retained their Louth U16 Championship title in dramatic circumstances
against a gallant Naomh Moninne side in an exciting final played at Darver on Sunday
November 16.

The Fechins scored the opening two points through midfielder Liam Ryan and free taker
John Stephenson. Moninne replied with their opening point on 10 minutes from a Darren
Geoghegan free.

The holders lead was extended to three points 0-5 to 0-2 before they grabbed the games
opening goal through corner forward Sean Kerrisk on 24 minutes.

Points late in the half from Jack Carr and Stephenson helped their side to lead at the
break by 1-7 to 0-2.

Full forward Ultan McEneaney struck over the opening point of the second half for Naomh
Moninne inside 60 seconds. The sides shared the next two points before the impressive
Ross Berkery restored the Fechins half time advantage with a good point from play.

Moninne recieved the boost of a goal on 39 minutes when James Murphy was quickest
to react to a block down by keeper Robbie Cunningham to fire to the net from close range.

A foul on McEneaney saw Moninne awarded a penalty by referee Jonathan Reid which
Darren Geoghegan dispatched to the net in style to leave just two points between the teams
1-9 to 2-4.

A further brace of Geoghegan points tied up matters on 46 minutes and the same player
fired his side in front from another free on 49 minutes.

The Fechins drew level through John Stephenson's fourth free of this encounter and they
went in front again with a good point from Ian Connor with two minutes remaining on the
watch.

The game looked to be heading for extra time when Darren Geoghegan pointed for his
side but two minutes into injury time a mistake by Moninne keeper Ciaran McGlynn was
punished by Ross Berkery when he fired low to the bottom right hand corner of the net.

The Fechins sealed the victory with a late pointed free from John Stephenson.
Afterwards the Brian O Broin Cup was presented to the St Fechins captain Robbie
Cunningham by the Coiste Iomana Secretary Maurice Murphy.
