Leinster Council delegates last night gave their approval to examine the details of what format a proposed round-robin system for the province's senior football championship might take.

As many as eight teams could be involved in the proposed round-robin series which looks set to appear on the Congress agenda next year. If the series gets the green light from Congress, it will come into effect in 2016.

The proposal comes after this year's Leinster SFC witnessed a number of one-sided games, including Meath's 28-point hammering of Carlow and Dublin's total and utter dominance of the championship. In winning their ninth Delaney Cup in 10 years, the Dubs beat Laois, Wexford and Meath by an average of 14 points.

Speaking at the launch of 'Game for Anto' in Belfast yesterday, Dublin manager Jim Gavin gave his backing to the proposal.

"My take on it is there has to be more games, that's the bottom line. It is unacceptable that teams might only play two games considering the preparation that goes into it, so we all acknowledge that a new format is needed," he said.
