August 18, 2014

Cooley Kickhams Brian White
The action in the Division 1 league over the weekend ended in dramatic fashion as a last gasp Brian White goal gave Cooley a 1-9 to 0-11 victory over O Raghallaighs to move off the foot of the table.

Cooley went into the game determined to lift themselves off the bottom of the table and at half time looked to be in command as they led by 0-6 to 0-3.

However, the O Raghallaighs fought back to level as the game went into the final quarter. Two points from Ben Rogan looked to have sealed the win but White proved to be Cooley's saviour once again as he scored the only goal of the game.

Geraldines now occupy the bottom position in the table after they lost out to Nh Mairtin by 3-8 to 1-11.

The three-point victory means that the Monasterboice outfit move on to six points, one ahead of the Geraldines.

The Mairtins were leading by 2-4 to 0-6 at half time with their goals coming from Brian Berrill, Brian McQuillan and Gareth Lambe.

At the other end of the table, St Patricks continued their winning run as a 1-13 to 0-5 victory over Dundalk Gaels made it nine wins from nine.

The Gaels started well in an even first half but with Danny O'Connor and Eamon Breen among the scorers, the Pats went in at the break leading by 0-7 to 0-2.

The result was never in doubt as the Lordship side tagged on further points early in the second half before Darragh Lafferty completed a comfortable with the game's only goal.

The Dreadnots consolidated their position in second place but had to hold off a spirited Kilkerley comeback before emerging with a 3-11 to 0-18 win.

A Peter Kirwan goal in the opening stages proved to be the difference between the teams in a tight first half as the Dreadnots went in leading by 1-6 to 0-6.

The Clogherhead side looked to be set for a comfortable win when David O'Brien and Ronan Fitzpatrick added goals just after the restart to put their side nine clear.

However, Kilkerley refused to give up and with Shane Lennon and Daniel McKeown leading the charge, they reduced the gap to one point with just minutes left. However, Pat Lynch had the final say to ensure victory for the Dreadnots.

Meanwhile, Newtown Blues leap-frogged Mattock Rangers to move into the top four thanks to a 2-13 to 0-10 win in Collon on Friday night.

The Blues made their intentions clear from the opening whistle and inside the first minute had the ball in the net thanks to Conor Brannigan.

The same player added a second in the 11th minute to help establish a comfortable 2-7 to 0-4 lead at the break.

Mattock battled gamely in the second half but couldn't close the gap as the Blues headed home with two vital points.
