John Mitchels caused the first surprise of the Louth Junior Championship when two late points saw them edge past St Kevins in The Grove on Saturday evening.

Substitutes, Darren Henry and Brendan McDonnell, kicked the late points to see the Ballybailie men earn their reward for a fine overall performance.

With the Philipstown men short a number of players through injury, the Mitchels set their stall out early as they began determined to get a grip on proceedings. They made their early domination count when a goal from Mikey Nulty on ten minutes put them in charge.

However, the Kevins battled back with a goal from Darren McMullen in the third quarter but the Mitchels finished strongly and went in at the break with a 1-4 to 1-1 lead.

The Philipstown men came out strongly in the second half produced a second goal from Andrew Campbell along with three points to take a three point lead at 2-4 to 1-4.

This time it was the Mitchels turn to respond to the challenge and they did so in admirable fashion by scoring three points to draw level entering the final ten minutes.

With the game delicately balanced it was the introduction of subs Henry and McDonnell that proved decisive as their late scores gave the Mitchels a very welcome win.
