McNulty: Harps were the better side on the day

October 24, 2008
While feeling disappointed defeat, Glencar/Manorhamliton boss Dessie McNulty admitted that his side lost out to a better Eastern Harps side last Sunday at Markievicz Park. McNulty's charges took on the Sligo Champions in the first round of the Connacht Senior Football Club Championships and were ousted from the competition by ten points, after falling 1-9 to 1-2 behind with a stale first-half performance. Siding by his team's preparations for the provincial first round tie, McNulty believes that there can be no arguments that the better team didn't win on the day. "We regrouped fairly well after the county final," said McNulty. "We trained on Thursday night and had a game last weekend. We thought we did everything right, maybe we were psyched up to win the county final but I still felt we would do well here today. "But it just didn't materialise on the day and at some stage, your luck will run out and it probably ran out today. Having said that, the better side on the day won today. "We are disappointed but there are no real qualms about the result. They were the better side on the day. They took their scores in the first-half and the second-half, I felt we dominated particularly in the third quarter. A poor opening half-hour paved the way for eventual defeat, and the Glencar boss pointed out that his side had left themselves trailing too many times this year, and that it caught up with them on Sunday. "We were far too flat in the first-half, we just weren't hungry enough but in all fairness, in the second-half, we did play some good football and ran at them. But is just didn't happen. "We've been saying all year that we'll probably leave a hill too high to climb and I think that game finally came today and against a good side like Eastern Harps, you can't afford to do that." It's not all doom and gloom though for this team though, by any means, as they have a chance to make history for the club in the coming weeks that will be the priority now, according to McNulty. "Manorhamilton have never done the double and if we did, it will be history for the club. We'd be hoping to go a step further and we'd hope to make the League final," he added.
