A week after he was supposed to be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, James Finn scaled a completely different peak yesterday when he captained Ballyfin to a sensational Laois IFC final victory over Timahoe at O'Moore Park.

The county star, who made his championship debut for Laois against Wicklow in Aughrim last May, was due to climb Africa's highest mountain last week, but had to stay at home after Ballyfin reached the county final. And despite being rank outsiders, the dual club powered to a 3-9 to 0-7 victory with 17-year-old corner forward Sean Moore scoring 3-4.

Finn had planned to climb Mount Kilimanjaro along with fellow Laois man Gary Fitzpatrick for the suicide awareness charity Pieta House, but it could be some time before he gets around to undertaking that particular challenge with Meath champions Ballinlough next up for Ballyfin in the first round of the Leinster club IFC next Saturday.
