Courtwood end the famine

September 30, 2014

A 27 year gap to the club's last first team title was bridged by Courtwood in Páirc Uí Mhórdha, Portlaoise on Friday night when they strolled to victory over Slieve Bloom/Castletown running out 4-13 to 1-7 winners.

First half goals from Colm Wilson and Mark O'Halloran put The Wood firmly in the driving seat and left them 2-7 to 0-2 ahead at half time. Laois county senior star Niall Donoher added a brilliant third goal and man of the match Mark O'Halloran completed the rout. A late Ben Conroy goal was mere consolation for the men from the hurling heartland of Laois near Mountrath and it was left to Courtwood captain Robbie Flynn to receive the Bill Phelan Cup on behalf of his club and end the many years of heartache for the small club on the Kildare border who now go on to host the Wexford champions in their first ever provincial campaign.
