Cavan 2-14

Tyrone 4-9

Tyrone went joint top of division two as they edged out a physical Cavan on the Breffni Park 3G surface on Sunday. Gemma Begley's late goal after a spirited and battling performance secured a win which was richly deserved.

Inspired by a quality 2-6 from Niamh O'Neill Tyrone showed resilience with Cavan looking on course for the win as they led several times through what turned out to be an entertaining contest, the tie was in the balance right up until the final whistle.

Cavan had led by two going into the latter stages with Aishling Sheridan and Catriona Smith tagging on late scores but Begley was on hand to slot home a fine goal which was followed by O'Neill's sixth point of the day deep into injury time.

Begley had seen a second half penalty saved by Holly Lynch, the Cavan keeper denied Begley and Emma Hegarty in the first half too while Tyrone also missed several chances but their flowing game was back and they carved out the win.

Cavan scored a penalty themselves through Aishling Doonan as Tyrone had pulled away with second half goals from Begley  and an O'Neill brace. The penalty set up an exciting climax, underscored with some well taken scores and some solid Tyrone defending. Joanne Barrett, young Caoilean Conway Christiane Hunter and Neamh Woods controlled and measured throughout.

Hughes and O'Neill scored  early points but it was the Breffni girls who led at the break 1-6 to 0-5, Aishling Sherdan found Shannon Lynch's net although the ball that came in to the square hit the outside off the post and was clearly wide before Doonan pushed it in.

O'Neill and Begley points after the restart pulled Tyrone right back into the game and they were level when  Begley goaled six minutes in. Both teams traded scores as the lead changed several times before Begleys spot kick was saved.

O'Neill's two goals followed and Tyrone led 2-8 to 1-8  going into the  last quarter, Cavan responded, Doonan, with her penalty with O'Rielly and Sheridan points giving  them a two point advantage. They did lose Doonan was yellow carded on 26 minutes but they still looked home and hosed.

Gemma Begley had other ideas though, on hand for the goal with Niamh O'Neill adding the insurance point. a late Sheridan point cut the gap to one as time ran out.
