Minor ladies

GERALDINES 4-08
ROBERT EMMETS 3-06

Well done to Geraldines Minor Girls as they bounced back from a midweek defeat in the Minor Championship to run out 4-08 to 3-06 winners to a gallant Robert Emmets team.

Following on from the game on Wednesday against Kilcock the Girls needed a win to keep hopes of progressing alive and from the throw in they started very strong, playing brilliant football racing into a big lead ,which they maintained right through the half ,with Emmets only scoring a single point..

Upon the half time whistle the game seemed at this stage a mere formality with Geraldines well ahead by fourteen points leading 3-06 to 0-01.

At this stage of the game and 14 points down many a Senior inter county team would throw in the towel ,but not this Courageous bunch of Girls from Robert Emmets .This game was not lost yet and straight from the whistle they went on the attack splitting the posts with a point from the off.

If the first half had been a Geraldines onslaught then the same could be said for Robert Emmets in the second with the home side putting in a brilliant 20 minute spell where they hit 3-03 without reply.
Geraldines needed to dig deep and that they did as the Girls showed tremendous character and team spirit to prevent the lead from slipping away ,scoring 1-02 to Emmets further 2 points to keep distance between the sides.
At the full time whistle in this enthralling game Geraldines had won out with a final scoreline of Geraldines 4-08 ,Robert Emmets 3-06.
Well done to both talented teams for a fantastic game of football full of Courage, Character and brilliant football from both sides ,well done Girls ye are all a credit to your clubs..

Venue: Sarsfields GAA Grounds

Final Score AET:

Sarsfields 4 -9 Milltown 1-15

Full Time Score in regulation time.

Sarsfields 4-5 Milltown 1-14

Newly crowned Intermediate Champions Sarsfields played host to Milltown of Westmeath on a fine sunny day to contest the Semi-Final of the Leinster Intermediate Championship. A large crowd turned to see the girls, back in action after a ten year gap and the match proved to be an absolute cracker.
They visitors drew first blood and went ahead by two points within the opening minute. Sarsfields steadied the ship with two well taken points by Noelle Earley on 2mins and Roisin Byrne on 8 mins. Sarsfields took the lead on 9 mins with a great goal by Noelle Earley. Milltown scored on 10 mins and they took command of the game scoring a goal and two points without reply. Roisin Byrne kept Sarsfields in touch with a point on 19 mins. Milltown then scored from the restart but a fine solo effort from Roisin Byrne saw Sarsfield score a well taken goal. It breathed a new lease of life into the Sarsfields players. From the kickout Sarsfields attacked with venom and Milltown conceded a penalty. Orlaigh Judge stepped up and converted under tremendous pressure. Milltown managed to pull a point back for just before the stroke of half time.

Half Time Score:

Sarsfields 3-03 Milltown 1-07

The second half didnt start to plan for Sarsfields as they conceded three early points on 3, 4 and 5 mins. Roisin Byrne scored a point for the Sash on 8 mins but Milltown kept the pressure up and pointed on 9 and 11 mins. Sarsfields grew strong and Roisin Byrne scored another fine goal on 14 mins. Milltown edged two points ahead with calmy taken scores on 20 and 22 mins. With five minutes to go Sarsfields looked like they were down and out but the resilience and self belief in this Team is frightening. Roisin Byrne again popped up on 28 mins to level the game with another well taken goal. With thirty seconds to go on the clock the only bit of controversy in the match occurred when the Referee signalled for a Sarsfields 13 yard free kick only to have his mind changed by the umpire. From the resulting kick out the Referee blew the full time whistle.

Full Time:

Sarsfields 4-5 Milltown 1-14

Extra Time:

The first half of extra time was a very cautious affair from both teams. With a place in the Leinster Final up for grabs neither team wanted to give ground. Milltown opened the scoring with a point in the first minute and Noelle Earley levelled for the Sash on 2 mins. It was a hard fought battle and neither side managed a point for the rest of the first half. Sarsfields came out strong in the final period of extra time and scored in the first minute with a well taken point by Noelle Earley. The match took its toll on both teams but it was the self belief this group of Sarsfields players have, that carried them over the line. Great defending and a tireless display by each and every one of the players including the subs gave them the edge over the visitors in the closing moments. Roisin Byrne finished strongly with two vital points on 5 and 7 mins which gave Sarsfields a hard fought victory on a perfect sunny October afternoon.

Milltown on their day and if they had have taken their chances could have run out winners but this Sarsfields team is made of steel. They refused to be beaten and its this self belief that has brought them to a first Leinster Final in ten years. They will be a force to be reckoned with in the final on October 26th where they will play Kilmacud Crokes from Dublin. Good luck in the Final.
