Kerry Ladies updates

August 26, 2014

There was disappointment in Birr when the Kerry senior ladies were defeated by Leinster Champions Dublin in the TG4 All Ireland Quarter Finals. Kerry never seemed to get going & a few questionable calls from referee also hindered the team. However overall Dublin were much sharper & deserved their victory. Dublin raced into an early 3 point lead, all from frees as the Kerry blanket defence were forced into fouling with the Dublin half forwards & backs running at Kerry. Sarah Houlihan finally got Kerry on the score board after 8 mins from a placed ball. But Dublin responded again with 2 more frees all from Sinead Ahern & their first from play Lindsay Peat. Disaster struck for Kerry, when Niamh McEvoy was left unmarked & collected a ball from a quick free which she lobbed over Edel Murphy's head into the net, Dublin 1-06 Kerry 0-01. Emma Sherwood got Kerry's second & first from play in the 24th min, a good score from distance & Sarah Houlihan added another free. But Dublin added 3 more of their own - 2 frees & 1 from play. Half time Dublin 1-09 Kerry 0-03. Kerry with nothing to loose threw everything at Dublin in the second half & clawed themselves back into game. Patrice Dennehy, Lorraine Scanlon and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh scored to bring Dublin within touching distance. But Dublin regrouped & Noelle Healy ran through the Kerry defence, & hit a powerful shot to the net, with the Kerry team & mentors furious over the number of steps taken. Kerry at the other end had no such luck as Louise Galvin hit the goalpost with the rebound collected by Deirdre Corridan & pointed. Kerry to their credit kept working & scores from hard working Patrice Dennehy & Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh kept Kerry in touch, but Dublin always had a reply to ensure they never got close enough. Deirdre Corridan's long range free in the dying minutes did get Kerry the goal they craved as she lobbed the keeper, but it was too little too late.  Dublin now go into the semi final where they will meet Galway.

After the game Senior Manager William O'Sullivan stepped down. His two year term was completed & he decided to step aside. This was his second term in the post & he previously was a selector. William brought the team to an All Ireland final in 2012 & won Munster title & National League title in 2013. William wished the players, future management & Kerry Ladies Football board the best of luck in the future. Kerry Ladies Football board will meet in the coming weeks to formulate a process on the appointment of a new manager.
The focus now turns to the domestic scene, with key games going ahead this weekend in the Rhyno Quality Feeds Co. League, which may ultimately decide who is staying up & going down. In Division 1 table toppers Southern Gaels host reigning champions Laune Rangers. The Laune side have struggled to find from & injuries to players such as Sarah Jane Joy & Amy Foley hasn't helped matters. But they have underperformed this season, as they still count Patrice Dennehy, Bernie Breen & Sarah Houlihan in their ranks. In Division 2 Finuge St Senans travel the short distance to Tralee to face Na Gaeil. Na Gaeil will be hoping to solidify their spot in the top half of the table to secure their spot in the Division 2 final as top 2 into final. While Finuge St Senans will be hoping to climb into fourth spot to secure a spot in the shield final. But tipping Na Gaeil in this one as they have a wealth of experience, despite some injury concerns at the moment. In Division 3 it is a battle of the black & amber as Currow are home to Dr Crokes. Dr Crokes have had a very good consistent league campaign & have already secured top spot. Currow have also put in a good campaign & played quite well & have also secured their spot in fourth. An interesting game to be sure, but with not a whole pile to play for, for both teams, it will be an opportunity to test players further.
The Educate.ie U14 Division 1 Final is confirmed for Sunday 31st August between Fossa & Rathmore. Both teams have inter county players from the All Ireland winning U14 team & in the earlier rounds played a thrilling exciting draw. An open flowing game of football is in store.

Congratulations to Moyvane who won the Glebe Kitchens U12 Division 5 title last Monday 11th August defeating Spa in a very exciting game. Moyvane took early control of the game but Spa made them work very hard for every score they got. Moyvane pulled well ahead in the early stages of the second half but Spa fought back bravely. But in the end, Moyvane held out. Mary Courtney of Glebe Kitchens was on hand to present the title to a proud Moyvane captain Gillian Musgrave & she  also offered great praise to Spa, in what was a second final in a week for many of the players. All that remains now in the Glebe Kitchens U12 Co. League are the Div 3 & 4 ties, which will be played very soon.
On Saturday in Fossa over 80 girls attended the last day of the U12 Development Squad programme. The programme of the events for the day included friendlies between all 4 regions, refreshments & then fun activities & team bonding games. William O'Sullivan Senior manager & senior players Aislinn Desmond, Caroline Kelly & Edel Murphy were on hand to give the girls words of encouragement. We also had the Munster & All Ireland U14 titles on display. We would like to thank the following clubs for use of facilities the past number of weeks: Laune Rangers GAA for use of Cloon, St Mary's GAA Caherciveen, Cromane GAA, Castleisland Desmonds, St Senans Mountcoal, Scartaglin GAA, Currow GAA, Legion GAA , Ballycasheen N.S Killarney, Kenmare GAA., Mounthawk School, Abbeydorney GAA, John Mitchels GAA & Na Gaeil GAA. Many thanks to Fossa GAA for use of facilities on Saturday. Also many thanks to all the coaches who gave their time freely.
Kerry ladies senior team face Dublin on Saturday 23rd August in the TG4 All Ireland Quarter Final. The game which will be televised on TG4 takes place in St Brendans Park Birr at 12.30 Dublin under new management had a very strong league campaign, comprehensively defeating an under strength Kerry in the early rounds, loosing to Cork in the league final. They also had a very good campaign in Leinster, remaining undefeated to become champions. Dublin have a very good panel & with strong performances underage in Minor & U21 especially they have a strong bench to call upon. Dublin will be depending on Siobhan McGrath & Sinead Goldrick to anchor their defense while up front Lyndsey Davey & Noelle Healy have been their score getters.  The tough game against Donegal will stand to Kerry.  Will be one of the most tightest & competitive of all the quarter finals, but tipping Kerry of course to shade it.
Kerry Ladies Football board offer our condolences to the family of Donal Curtin, Knocknagoshel. Donal was a former Chairperson of Kerry Ladies Football & was also a selector for the Kerry Junior Ladies intercounty team. He was also very active within his club Castleisland Desmond Ladies. Donal was a great leader & will be a massive loss to ladies football. Our deepest sympathies to his wife Shelia, daughter Mariah and son Darragh. Donal was laid to rest on Sunday 17th August in Knocknagoshel. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
