A contender for the best hurling game of 2015 was played out in front of a handful of spectators last Thursday night.

Those lucky enough to be in UL witnessed an epic Munster inter-firms senior hurling final between EI Electronics of Shannon and Limerick Teachers. Extra-time was needed before the Clare boys prevailed on an incredible 5-27 to 3-28 scoreline.

With players of the calibre of Nicky O'Connell, Alex Morey, Cathal O'Connell, Aaron Cunningham (all EI Electronics) and Shane McGrath, Nickie Quaid and Niall Moran (Limerick Teachers) on show, the Teachers held a slender 2-9 to 1-11 lead at half-time. When Limerick inter-county 'keeper Quaid, who lined out at wing forward, put three points between the sides with two minutes remaining, the title looked destined for the Treaty County, but late scores from Barry Loughnane, Morey and Cathal O'Connell forced extra-time.

The sides were still deadlocked on 3-24 apiece at the end of the first period, but a brace of goals from Sixmilebridge's Derek Fahy eventually settled it.
Cathal O'Connell top-scored for the winners with 0-15, while Aaron Cunningham helped himself to 3-2. Adare's Willie Griffin bagged 2-4 for the Teachers, with Quaid and Niall Moran contributing 0-7 and 0-6 respectively.

On this evidence, the often forgotten about inter-firms competition is alive and well.
