Carlow senior hurlers are on the brink of pulling out of the Walsh Cup due to a lack of players being available.

Their county board chairman Michael Meaney made the startling claim at a meeting with clubs where he explained to delegates the reason for the shortfall in numbers.

As it stands, only 17 players have committed to Pat English's squad for the coming year due to a number of reasons.

"The facts don't lie," Meaney was stated as saying by the Carlow Nationalist. "We have 17 committed players and we have two who are injured, while we have three to four others who will not be available for a month at the start of the New Year.

"We don't have enough players to field a team for the Walsh Cup. We are working away and would hope to increase the number of players. We need a minimum of 30 but we don't have them yet."

Two players that won't be available for the Walsh Cup are Marty and Jack Kavanagh who are attending a family wedding in Australia, but they have committed for the rest of the year.
