Lighting up the country!

Lampost Construction is a company which specialises in the design and manufacture of steel columns for floodlighting. Here Michael James Murphy, son of the owner and founder Oliver Murphy, gives us an insight into why the Louth-based company is so successful.

Gone are the days when weather stopped play . . . well almost. Thanks to all sorts of high-quality playing facilities top notch sporting occasions are very seldom halted in their tracks by the elements. And, in this respect, the laws of nature are being taken head-on by the good people of Lampost Construction Co. Limited who are helping to ensure that all sorts of activities can continue unabated even when day becomes night.

Companies like Lampost Construction Ltd are helping to keep the engines of sport ticking over day and night right across the length and breadth of Ireland.

Based in Greenore, Co. Louth - some 15 miles north of Dundalk - Lampost Construction was established in 1982 by Greenore native Oliver Murphy and has been going from strength to strength ever since.

The leading firms in its field in Ireland, Lampost Construction specialises in the manufacture of steel floodlighting columns and accompaning brackets. It also manufactures the steel supports for ball-catching nets, the actual goalposts themselves and steel flag holding poles which invariably adorn clubhouses etc.

Over the years, the family-run business has built up an enviable reputation in the trade and has seen its volume of business mushroom on a continuing basis to the extent that it is now the first port of call for many, many sporting organisations, local authorities and building contractors nationwide who are anxious to light up the lives of their members or customers.

So what’s the secret behind the success story that is Lampost Construction?
“I’d have to say that the company is known far and wide for its willingness to push the boat out as far as meeting the requirements of our customers are concerned.

“We have prided ourselves in our ability to adapt to the demands of the marketplace and everything we do is geared towards satisfying our customers’ requirements. That means that our products are designed to the specific needs of the individuals or groups who seek our products.

“Our products are all designed in-house and can be tailored to meet any requirement which may be forthcoming from the customer. We offer free quotations and expert advice on the suitability of the products, location of site etc,” explains Michael James, B.Eng. (23), company founder and owner.

Located within a few football pitches of the club grounds of St. Patrick’s, Lordship, it is not suprising to learn that Lampost Construction has garnered a lot of business from the world of Gaelic games with such luminaries as top notch Wee County outfit Cooley Kickhams and high-profile Kerry club Austin Stacks from Tralee listed among their list of recent customers.

Although ultra confident in the company’s ability to continue to develop and grow, Michael James confesses that competition in the marketplace is pretty fierce from both Irish competitors and imported products from Britain.

So how does Lampost Construction stay one step ahead of the posse?
“By sheer hard work and by making sure that we give the customers what they want and by continuing to manufacture quality products.

“Most of the business we benefit from derives from word of mouth as in referrals and recommendations. We do very little advertising because we find that if a customer is happy with what we have given him, the chances are that he will tell others he’s been given a good deal from us and in that way other potential customers are generated.”

Certainly the word has long since spread to quality electrical wholesalers, reputable builders, sporting organisations, county councils and many more besiders that when it comes to lighting up facilities, few companies can equate with the five-star service offered by the Greenore-based place of excellence.

A labour intensive industry, Lampost Construction provides gainful, employment to some 50 workers in Greenore. A lot of the work carried out by the company relates to the demand for its products emanating from ambitious and progressive GAA clubs around the country.

“The GAA market has grown substantially in recent years and hopefully things will continue to expand in that regard in the coming years also.

“A lot of clubs are availing of the various grant aid that is available to them for the purchase and installation of floodlighting facilities and with the playing season seemingly getting longer and longer every year, the desire to have training facilities available all year round has increased a lot in recent times.

“We’ve seldom been busier and we’re confident that the market for floodlighting columns is going to continue to grow and develop and we know that if we continue to do what we do best, we’ll see our market share grow in line.”

Looks like Lampost Construction will be lighting up our world for a long time to come!
