Cooper has every right to give his views now he's retired IMO. GetOverTheBar (Tyrone) - Posts: 1388 - 02/10/2017 17:27:48 2052499 Link 4 |
Hard to go toe to toe with Kerry in an All-Ireland Final but that Tyrone team were well able for it.A serious Tyrone team and I'm sure Gooch has the height of respect for them. endgame (Roscommon) - Posts: 2141 - 02/10/2017 19:33:39 2052542 Link 1 |
I read the extract about him being dropped in 2009 and thought he came across as a bit self-important. His comments about Tyrone are a bit ungracious as well. I had a good view of him and Ricey in the second-half of the 2005 final and there wasn't too much chit-chat that I could see. Not saying it didn't happen at all, I'm sure it did, but I think he's exaggerating a bit. Whatever sells though. MichaelO (Tyrone) - Posts: 820 - 02/10/2017 19:58:13 2052545 Link 2 |
yeah still smarting from the defeat, easy to talk the talk when you've retired and be controversial especially when you have a big event to promote

If you take out all the fu*ks in his book there is very little in it. Bernardo (Monaghan) - Posts: 593 - 02/10/2017 20:52:10 2052561 Link 3 |
That Tyrone team could mix it anyway they wanted , any team that wins 3 all Irelands is a superb team . One thing he is right about though is the off the ball stuff that goes on , not just Tyrone but every county does it and umpires , linesmen ignore it hipster (Dublin) - Posts: 2509 - 02/10/2017 21:15:12 2052566 Link 1 |
Certain amount of bitterness there still? Bit of a sweeping generalisation to suggest that the entire Tyrone team of that era were professional sledgers. Ricey, maybe(!); but incorrect to say that the likes of Seán Cavanagh, Enda McGinley, Cormac McAnallen, Stevie O'Neill etc were sledgers; they weren't. essmac (Tyrone) - Posts: 1141 - 02/10/2017 22:01:28 2052570 Link 1 |
Very honest of you Getoverthebar. Tyrone were a great side, didn't like some of the off the ball stuff from them mind but the present Dub side are doing the same stuff and no one seems to mind. Havn't picked up the book yet, any good? I finished Donal MacAnallen's book about his bother last week. It was powerful stuff, I'd recommend it highly. Ya look the Tyrone team of the naughties got under all our skins down here big time but I have nothing but respect now for what they achieved winning 3 allirelands, I spent many a league game in Tyrone over the years and the Tyrone people are very gracious in defeat and in victory . Is he really downing Tyrone for sledging, in the article it says 'Tyrone were pushing the boundaries that year - maybe overstepping them at times - and who could really blame them?'. These books if you don't get some specific details like this can be boring. bdbuddah (Meath) - Posts: 1299 - 02/10/2017 23:27:09 2052586 Link 0 |
Sorry bud but I'm not letting you away with that. 'Present Dub side doing the same stuff but nobody seems to mind'. You're having a laugh. Did you read Cooper's comments in full? Kings of sledging, pinching, hitting off the ball, keeper taking him out. Are you seriously comparing this behaviour to this Dublin team? The most cynical game that I witnessed all year was down in Tralee where nearly every Dublin player had to have his jersey replaced at half time. I've never seen such an exhibition of pulling, dragging and off the ball stuff. And to state that 'nobody seems to mind' yet the media have done nothing but comment on Dublin players taking down Mayo backs in the last minute. Do you not get the national papers in Kerry? You'd swear that a 3 in a row hadn't been achieved.

Mate are you for real ? were you at the Dublin v Kerry league game in Tralee ? That Kerry performance was the most cynical from any team ive seen in 20 years nobody seems to care about Kerry cynicism is what you should be saying. superbluedub (Dublin) - Posts: 2837 - 03/10/2017 09:02:11 2052612 Link 2 |
I find the extract where he said he didn't mind marking Ricey because he wasnt the slickest corner back around hilarious. I was them games Gooch and you didnt look to be enjoying yourself. 3rdmidfielder (Australia) - Posts: 282 - 03/10/2017 09:41:54 2052620 Link 0 |
Took the words from me. I'm no angel myself but i don't know how he fitted so many expletives into the text. i was starting to lose concentration with the amount of * symbols throughout the extract.

I wouldn't take much notice of what Gooch has to say about Tyrone anymore to be honest. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13693 - 03/10/2017 10:40:19 2052635 Link 1 |
While score-settling in a book may give the writer a short-term satisfaction, in a small country, you'd be far better advised to follow the example of the diplomacy and charm of the likes of Mick O'Dwyer, Páidí Ó Sé, Darragh Ó Sé - those men knew / know how to handle themselves both on and off the pitch and are respected and well-liked all over the country. Even if you have a good reason to give out about someone, there's a time and a place to do it, and that's not years later in a book, but of course the publishers will always be putting pressure on to spice things up; the final version is as much down to the publisher as the player, in fairness. essmac (Tyrone) - Posts: 1141 - 03/10/2017 10:52:58 2052640 Link 2 |
