The strongest GAA province?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Really a no brainer. Munster has four of the ten remaining teams left in the football championship. Also three of the six hurling teams left in the hurling championship.

Define "true"? Isn't every province a "true GAA province" or am I missing something?

Exactly. Take up rugby or watch the Railway Cup if you want to follow a province.

Kerry and Dublin Region will be the only counties starting next year's leagues with the possibility of winning Division 1 in both football and hurling.

On average of football league placing, Ulster is the more competitive football championship. It is made up of a lot of counties who tend to yo-yo up and down from Division 1. Tyrone are nudging into All-Ireland contention.

Agree. At the end of September it will be a county left standing not a province

True in the sense that Munster counties take both codes seriously (obviously Kerry is mainly Football and Clare - Hurling) and that it is the most successful in both codes in terms of national titles at all grades.

It's not a level playing-field though.
Put Kerry in Ulster instead of say Fermanagh and they wouldn't have half as many All-Irelands.

Munster is undeniably the strongest GAA province, considering its strong hurling tradition too.

Even I agree with this now. Through the National Leagues and qualifiers teams spend more time playing sides outside their own province. The days of 'our province is the strongest rhubarb, rhubarb' are gone. What I would say is that compared to Ulster sides 10 years ago the current crop of Ulster teams and players are very poor in general.

I think Dublin would beat any combination of the rest of leinster, maybe even the rest of the country.
it should be considered it's own province and be taken out of leinster :)

I would tend to slightly agree with another poster Munster have the potential to be the strongest province if Clare and Tipp consider thier surge in football over a sustained period.

If it is solely viewed from a football point of view ulster is still the strongest province despite the drastic dip in class of thier teams.

If it viewed solely in terms of hurling I think Leinster pips Munster because you have Kilkenny, Dublin, Galway and a resurgent Wexford.
In munster Cork hurling is struggling and Waterford and Clare just make noise in munster most of time and little else barring Clare's lucky all-ireland win a few years ago.

Early days yet, but I think Munster are well on their way to take Ulster's place as the best province at self praise.

I think if most Ulster Gaels are honest they would admit the province is in a bit of a football and hurling lull. The passion, fight and heart just don't seem to be there anymore; Indifference and apathy are winning out........... and soccer has won out in the battle with Gaelic Games in Belfast and Derry; most kids there don't give a monkeys about the GAA.

Well said lads, we don't need to ask the question why Ulster counties pull together to a certain extent, it's a no brainer, and understandable but as for the other 3, means nothing, well to me anyway.

Hello users, doubt this can be settled along provincial lines, as one province contains a large community who actively avoid the gas. Thus funding, participation, etc is greatly reduced. I am being kind not describing the situation in more detail than that. I somehow doubt this occurs much in munster, so something to bear in mind when posting??
