Two county grounds

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

After seeing Antrim having to play in a poor quality (for want of a better phrase) 'county' ground I was wondering how many have at least 2 good places to play. I know in Derry we have Celtic Park and Owenbeg where we play next against Meath. Surely it makes common sense to have a backup incase there is a problem with one ground or a fixture clash?

Donegal have three although Ballyshannon was far from great the last time I was there, Cork will next year have two again, Galway have two if you count the neglected Tuam Stadium, Kerry have two, I think Crossmaglen has county status so Armagh have two, think Tipp have two and Offaly have Birr along with Tullamore, Monaghan have two I believe and I'm almost certain Mayo havens second ground, is it Ballina?? We kind of have two in Meath in that the hurlers play in Trim. I was of the opinion Limerick had two although I'm open to correction and Waterford have two again for football and hurling, Roscommon have two although Kiltoom is very small in not sure if any more, standards of those "secondary grounds" vary greatly of course

Most county grounds apart from Croke Park, Thurles and Clones are white elephants. Counties can't maintain one county ground not to mind two...

Thanks lads. I know most counties have played in 2,3,4 different 'county' grounds but I was a bit vague in what I was asking. I was talking about Derry having 2 quality grounds and antrim not having one from what ive seen. playing a division 2 3 4 game in some club ground which holds a few 100 wasn't what I was getting at

Corrigan park for (Antrim/Limerick) looked like a club ground going by the highlights on the Sunday game. Galway have Pearse Stadium (fantastic pitch now after serious investment in drainage works last year with brilliant facilities in terms of toilets etc although I do acknowledge the traffic issues) and Tuam Stadium which has fallen back. Interestingly Ballinasloe is also a county ground and the only county ground in Galway with floodlights.

Was in McHale Park last week for our championship win and forgot they have very few toilet facilities in that new stand. Seemed to be only 2 sets of same at either end of the stand but am open to correction. Grand if it there is a tiny crowd but with 22k at the game and a decent proportion of these in the stand not impressed. The stand gives a good view once you are not stuck behind one of the pylons that reinforces it.

Thats not true about Antrim - we have a number of County designated grounds which have been used in the absence of Casement and others like Ballycastle, Loughgiel, Creggan all have good pitches and facilities. There is a difference between not having and not choosing to host a game on ones. The County hurling matches would be played on the mentioned grounds but the Football was decided to be played in Belfast.

Yeah limerick have gaelic grounds in the city and kilmallock which the footballers would be quite familiar with.

The best 'backup grounds ' in the country by a mile is mallow in Cork. Phonomenal facilities

Au contraire as Delboy used to say! Parnell Park is a fine ground. Compact, supporters close to the pitch. Makes for a great atmosphere.

Since 2000 Louth have played league matches in Dowdallshill, Ramparts, Clan na Gael Park (All Dundalk), Ardee, Darver and GAA Grounds in Drogheda. Is that a record for a county?
