Why no Football Referees from Dublin?

(Oldest Posts First)

Seeing the refereeing panel being announced, I am wondering why the largest populated County of Dublin is not represented either this year or last?

And further for my own curiosity, who was the the last ref from Dublin?

Would love to see Colm Lyons get more high profile games. Absolute gent and a very good ref.

Don't think there is anything suspicious about Dublin not having a ref. Gary McCormack will make the panel soon.

John Bailey from Dublin reffed 1986 All Ireland hurling final. I can't remember a Dub reffing a football final.

Not Dublin related but good to see refereeing committee. Delighted to see Cormac Reilly not on panel he done enough damage to Roscommon last year to last a life time. David Gough best ref in country imo

My father was a Dublin referee for years and it was always a bugbear with him why a Dublin ref never got any of the big championship matches. His arguement was that it was unfair to send in a ref from Leitrim or Longford for a big championship game when the standard of club football they were used to refereeing week in week out was at completely different level to championship. Not sure if I agree with him on that but can see his point.

What did Reilly do to Roscommon?
In any case he is very very highly regarded in Kerry I'm told.

Gough is very good alright. He just calls fouls and gets on with it. No pandering to top counties or benefit of the doubt to top players. The rest could learn from him.

Definitely agree on Cormac Reilly. Monaghan v Tyrone, Omagh 2011 was particular a low point which he has consistently met since.

bubba83 (Dublin) - referees have to want to do it and they have to be good enough. Regarding your point about referees from Leitrim or Longford, I'm not sure what the standard of club football has to do with refereeing competence. Are you even sure the standard of club football is that poor in those counties? Sound like a typical Dublin whinge. The standard of hurling in Dublin judged by its county team in the late 90s early 00s would have been considered poor. Aodán Mac Suibhne wouldn't have got a look in by that criteria. Both him and Noel O'Donaghue were obvious stand-outs when I was playing. The others were a mixed bunch. If there are guys that good who are ambitious they'll get their chance. Refereeing is a a thankless jobs, the reason rubbish referees hand around is that no one else wants to do it. Believe me if they are good enough they'll get a chance.

Sure with our Population, Financial and Infrastructure advantages, Dublin should be refereeing every All Ireland Final. It's time to split refereeing into two roles.....

Aaodan mac suibhne 2 Hurling '02 and '04
John Bailey 1 Hurling '86
Noel O'Donoghue 2 Hurling '80 and '82

For the football the last Dub ref was Paul Kelly in '73 if I remember correctly

Probably not enough folk in the county that know the rules.

I've seen Gough twice this year and thought he wasn't great but it can be a thankless job and you can't please everyone.

And a Dublin ref should be in charge of all the Dubs championship matches......so he wouldn't have far to travel.
