This is the time of year when all the player trading goes on with teams in the USA. Any word on any big names leaving this year?? Crossgaa (Mayo) - Posts: 553 - 21/04/2016 15:56:08 1848034 Link 0 |
I believe 2-3 Derry players intend to go according the papers during the week. Heron and Bell I think....2 starters for Derry which would be a big loss. May be convinced to stay though. The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2088 - 21/04/2016 18:11:01 1848101 Link 0 |
Cunniffe is gone from mayo but unsure is it to the states or not! Tizcold (Galway) - Posts: 239 - 22/04/2016 17:12:52 1848324 Link 0 |
3 Antrim hurlers are headed States side and this particular year I wouldn't blame them. But generally speaking it has to be frustrating for a county manager who puts faith in those players and in some cases build tactics etc around those players only for them to turn around at the business end of the year and say 'see ye lads!'. If lads want to go they should be honest at the start of the year and allow other fellas the chance to establish themselves as county players. Its usually too little too late to start drafting players in during May or June to be in tune with a group of players who have been working together for six months. As Aidan O Rourke said recently, 80% of GAA intercounty activity is now over anyway. Unless you play with Kerry, Dublin or Mayo you are not going to win anything and even if you do play with them, you won't have a serious game to play until the end of the summer. New York GAA offers good weather, regular games and the chance to socialise and have a great time. Here you get sporadic uncompetitive games and endless training and strict rules on socialising. The clever ones will go if given the opportunity. bennybunny (Cork) - Posts: 3917 - 22/04/2016 19:49:30 1848368 Link 0 |

Highly recommend the J1 summer....it's almost a rite of passage. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11230 - 24/04/2016 18:13:13 1848757 Link 0 |

Lockjaw - there lies the problem. Many players will now only play 2 games for their county and that is it. The least amount of football and involvement from all teams in Ireland is during the summer months which is crazy. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11230 - 25/04/2016 11:49:54 1849034 Link 0 |
From the outside looking in it seems that there not much in the club scene in Ireland during the summer months so it makes perfect sense to travel abroad. A lot of top players get really well taken of. Work. Accommodation and cash for playing. , most county players could leave here with 20 to 30 k in there pocket after one summer I would estimate. Never mind fringe county players, a lot of players from counties outside of the top 4-5 will be off for the summer, whether they'd be guaranteed starters or not. Think Westmeath are going to be short about 5-6 from their panel alone. moylagh (Meath) - Posts: 484 - 28/04/2016 11:25:45 1850359 Link 0 |
Just out of interest - how would a player get 30k home through customs?? Brolly (Monaghan) - Posts: 4472 - 28/04/2016 12:28:43 1850391 Link 0 |
Probably wire it home. I assume many are therefore going over on the three month holiday visa and working (under the counter). yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11230 - 28/04/2016 12:45:07 1850400 Link 0 |

Yew tree Pumping money into training kids is the way to go but that won't win senior championships. A lot of big guns have arrived to New York now to close out the championship. Huge sums of money being paid out this year. A good county player now will earn 20k for his efforts and not to mention work. Can't blame them it's huge for them Crossgaa (Mayo) - Posts: 553 - 12/07/2016 15:19:01 1881904 Link 0 |

Don't know about 20K but I know lads who have been offered up to 8k for two months.
