I would imagine you could double that for Dublin and divide by 4 for the weaker counties. It's a business now the day of the local county hero managing teams is gone.

I think I read this week Tyrone have a backroom team of 14.

That was actually a brilliant article by Damien Lawlor.

He has not slagged anyone off, he has taken no sides, it was very informative.

But it does indeed sound like there are a few moles in the workings, there have to be moles within the players group too for the 27-7 vote details to be revealed.

With regards to the backroom team, 24 is too big and in my opinion they definitely should not all be in the dressing room on match day. If the players lose trust in those around them they will be afraid - if they are afraid they will not perform. I think that having the extended panel travelling on match days makes sense - there has to be one eye on the future and even if a player doesn't taste championship action for two years, being within the camp, taking advice and seeing how things work should help.

All in all, good article, thanks for sharing it.

Agreed, an excellent read, I am trying to work out how a backroom team of 24 could be made up, I am presuming Buckley is not included in the 24:

4 Physios
1 Doctor
1 Dietican
1 Psychologist
4 Training Helpers (cones, water, gear etc)
2 County Board Reps (teamsheets, offical information)
2 Stats
1 Camera Man, training etc

Im struggling now and thats only 16, what role could the other 8 play, I am sure I have missed some.

Id agree with you slayer, although it is my understanding that the players were going to say nothing at all, until they were informed that the story had been brought to the press and was being printed. They then put forward the vote count to show how definitive this feeling was. The public show of unity at the meeting was in response to a media outlet 'revealing' how people had voted. All the people who supposedly voted for the management to remain were present at the meeting.

Sponsors, fundraising, Cairde Maigh Eo, donations from fans with deep pockets.

It would explain how running the county side costs the Mayo County Board so much from week to week (even if a lot of that goes on mileage and debt servicing for McHale Park). I seem to remember a county board delegate suggesting a round figure of something like €5k being spent per day at one stage.

I don't know about this 24-strong backroom staff thing. The entire staff were listed in the Connacht telegragh, and they had 20, and that was even including the two managers and the cb chairman...

and has the numbers dropped since H&C took over? I heard thats why the players were not happy? And has this spend taken away from other teams (underage). i heard Ballina played the mayo junior team in a friendly, leading to their all ireland final, and ballina had to give them a set of jerseys. Are all the resources going into the senior team? appears so to me.

Good combination. Wont get better than that group.

It's players they need...

Time and time again having to overreach with a shallow panel - any injuries to key men and they wont be winning much

They'll be doing well to make a semi-final in the league next year without COC and if he's not 100% in Connacht after not kicking a ball for 6 months - they could be caught

An interesting time ahead for Rochford - felt Castlebar had him well figured out

A kind of a one trick pony whiff off him perhaps..?

Great to see lads happy to volunteer to help out with Mayo from all parts of the country! If only they had the same level of finances as Dublin so they could compete....

A bit like Gooch is it? Very stupid statement and comes across of wanting to stick the boot in before he even starts which you only love to do. Very hard to keep a club team going like that. Corofin looked tired. Nothing but good things said about Rochford around those parts.

Bit harsh, not too easy to get a club to back to back All Irelands. Castlebar in the top 4 or 5 clubs in the country and still haven't got over the line so they were chomping at the bit.

Indeed. A bit like Bernard Dunne, retiring from boxing to take up a role with the Dublin footballers!

+1
been long year for Corofin with feck all rest. Rochford should be judged on last year which he done a great job guiding Corofin to All Ireland.

A manager should be judged on his last game

Sure weren't Vincents only tired last year when Corofin beat them?
