The Irish question - should the GAA be split?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

If there was a nation-wide poll of GAA fans (casual and serious fans alike) to see whether or not Ulster or 6-county teams should be eligible to compete in the All Ireland as of right, how do people feel the result would go? And if the poll was opened up to include non-GAA fans and the strong FG/partitionist element in Southern society, would that make much difference? Culturally, there is a lot of mutual bad-feeling there already - a de facto split. It would be interesting to see if voters might feel that this existing cultural split should be reflected in a formal split in the association.

Might be a good idea. Indeed we could run a very good championship up here in Ulster. Run it on a league basis ----- nine counties with eight games with the top four meeting in the semi finals.
Top team play fourth placed with second and third in the other semi.
The winners to meet in the final.
While down south they could hold the Irish round robin championship instead of the All Ireland eg Dublin Kerry and Mayo
They then could bring back the Tommy Murphy cup for the rest of them as a lot of people seem in favour of bringing it back.
The only thing about the Round robin Kerry would have only two games to win the thing.
Nah, but in hindsight they would miss us Ulster counties as without us the Sunday game would cease, the media/ Rte would never survive, Brolly , Spillane and O Roark would be out of a job.
So we best stay united.

There are a lot of us who really like what the Ulster counties have brought to Gaelic Games over the years. Many of us appreciate the lengths the Antrim, Down & Derry hurlers went to in order to participate in the All-Ireland championship. Same goes for the footballers. Added to that, those of us who love hurling & see the ongoing efforts by some so called 'weak' Ulster counties to play in the non-McCarthy Cups ..........

In short, no. Would prefer Ulster to remain within the current structure.

So issues raised over the discipline of players on several Tyrone teams = all Ulster teams should withdraw from the championship? Haaahahahah.... Get a grip, why should the rest of Ulster suffer or be punished for Tyrones discrepancies? If I commit a crime should my neighbours be arrested aswell? Seriously stupid thread...

No. The great strength of the GAA is that it has reminded indivisible and undivided irrespective of the security situation on our island for over 130 years. Besides, the partitionist element that you're referring to wouldn't know (for the most part) whether an O'Neill's is pumped or stuffed.

I think we should have 3 divisions! Division 1: should be Kerry - they could compete with themselves - ref could give them all the decisions and they could continue on their way to winning sam
Division 2: I would throw the Dubs into the Ulster championship -that would soften them up a bit! -an Ulster final in clones with the Dubs would be good.
Division 3: All the rest would be in this division and they all could enjoy the scenery of the country traveling from Antrim to Cork

We are humans - always looking for party's to align to and therefore disliking our rivals and competitors. That's why winning is met with such scenes of joy.

Nothing was ever achieved by backing down - persistence is the foundation of hope.

what a silly post. What is all this about. Its the gaa its sport what has politics got to do with it..
Dont think people complain about tyrone because they are in the north .. People complain about them because of their antics..
If cork conducted them selves in the same fashion i would expect people to complain about them too.

Also id like to point out when the northern teams were successful the country were shouting for them .. We all like to see a team rise and contest and win against the bigger teams .

In 2010 they country were shouting for down not cork same in 2002 and 03/05/08

your post is generated due to the back last against tyrone and their conduct.
Deal with the issue and stop trying to create a problem that doesnt really exist. Trying to mask tyrones failings but deflection to some kind of political agenda honestly only further explains the tyrone mentality ..
This them versus us thing you have got going is quiet sad. If you dont want to be in the GAA championship fine then fold your team and withdrow
If you want to play OUR ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONSHIP then conduct yourselves in a fashion that best represents the GAA . Its a privilage to be part of the organisation and certainly not a RIGHT

OUR ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONSHIP------- who do you refer to as OUR.
LET ME TELL YOU AS IRISHMEN/ WOMEN WE HAVE A RIGHT TO BE PART OF THE ASSOCIATION AND NOBODY WILL DENY US THAT RIGHT.
WHAT ABOUT GRASSROOTS ??DO THEY NOT KEEP THE GAME ALIVE,, WOULD THEIR BE A GAA WITHOUT THE PEOPLE WHO VOLUNTEER , GIVE THEIR SPARE TIME AND INTRODUCE CHILDREN TO GAELIC GAMES. ?
AS REGARDS CONDUCT I GUESS YOU BEST HAVE A WORD WITH THE TWO TEAMS WHO PLAYED YESTERDAY( DUBLIN/MAYO)
IS THAT THE TYPE OF GAME YOU WANT CHILDREN TO WATCH. ??
ALSO YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE POLITICTS IN SPORT AND THAT INCLUDES ALL SPORT. DO POLITICTS NOY EXIST IN COUNTY BOARDS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY??

Even with only Monaghan, Donegal & Cavan left the Ulster championship would probably still be the most competitive!!

Plus 1, LOL. united we stand, divided we fall,I think Tyrone are on the way back big time and I'm hoping Donegal can bring in some new players over the next few years and be challenging for Sam again,we had a great time this last 5 years and I'll never forget 2012,but '92 was better suppose being the first one.
I think the All Ireland championship needs to be restructured in some way though, because it's not balanced under the provincial system, and the black card needs to go in the bin, a sin bin for 10 mins would be more effective as teams are trying to drag people down to close out a game,a black card is no sanction when they can be replaced immediately.
