Your Counties Best Ever Managers : Top 3

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Okay so Donegal has only two AIs won so it's fairly easy to pick , Dublin and Kerry have had some superb managers so it might be more difficult .

For Donegal I'll go for :

1: Jim ( probably over achieved )
2: Brian ( 5 Ulsters and 1 AI )
3 I actually loved Mickey Moran , problem was he had a crowd of nut jobs under him .

Can only speak about those in my lifetime but it's pretty clear-cut IMO. .

1. Martin McHugh - Delivered an Ulster title with an unfancied side
2. Eamonn Coleman - National League final appearance in 01 and could mix it ith the best around that time.
3. Terry Hyland - Unprecidented underage success followed by a much needed overhaul of the senior panel. Tactically limited tho.

Cavanman - I was delighted Cavan won ulster under McHugh . Our county board should of been ashamed of themselves for not going for him , we had a serious side in mid 90s and they let him go . Put Donegal football back 10 years ! He might be a clown behind the mic but he was an excellent manager .

Easiest ever question
1 Sean Boylan
2 Sean Boylan
3 Sean Boylan

Honourable mention for Eamon Obrien, who was shafted unfairly.

The top two in Tyrone both followed the same route giving great service to the county in managing the minors and under 21's before serving long periods in charge of the senior team.
1. Mickey Harte
2. Art McRory
3. Jody O'Neill

Dr Eamonn O Sullivan
Mick O Dwyer
Jack O Connor

I'm including O'Connor in particular on the basis of what he's now doing with the underage talent in Kerry.

Dermot Healy/ Andy Gallagher. Helped Offaly hurlers make breakthrough in 1980, breaking Kilkenny dominance .
Eugene Mc Gee. Stopped 5 in a row by Kerry 1982
Fr. Tom Gilhooley RIP. Offaly footballers won first AI in 1971, beat Kerry in a replay to win title in 1972.

Yeah, he seemed to have a way with the players at the time. He mixed a group of experienced and very physically strong players with those who came from our 96 under21 team which lost to Kerry in the all ireland. He still speaks fondly of the Cavan supporters any time he is asked and still seems to have a soft spot for us.
Over his entire career, Coleman achieved much more obviously, but McHugh delivered our only ulster title in the last 46 years!!

No Paidi? Plenty of competition obviously but he ended the "famine". Whereas O'Connor had an unbelievable group of players at his disposal.

+1

Always thought that Mickey Moran was very hard done-by to get the boot after 2006, especially given the shambles that was the second coming of John O'Mahony.

John 'Tull' Dunne who oversaw the great 3 in a row football team of the swinging sixties. Absolute legend. John O'Mahoney not far off as a second for bringing SAM back after 32 years. In hurling can only be Cyril Farrell. 3 senior titles in the '80's
