Diarmuid Murtagh, How good can he be?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Over the last 2 weeks there was a lot of talk of Damien Comer and his exploits for both under 21 and senior for Galway. He is certainly a fantastic talent however there have been fleeting comments of this young player. For me however, at present, Murtagh is the best forward we have produced in the last 30 years. He is a future all-star in my view and his development hopefully will correlate with a rise in Roscommon football. He is in my view the best young forward in the country (Yes I said country). Consistently top scoring at minor, u21 and senior for Roscommon. What are other peoples opinion of this player? Bearing in mind he is only 20.

I completely agree with you Rosfan. I would imagine that he will win an Allstar within the next few years possibly even this year. Ive been championing him ever since minor level ever since i seen him score 1-13 in a schools game. Consistently puts in excellent performances for whatever team he plays for, county seniors, u-21, club, colleges etc.Scored 1-7 yesterday, won motm and can still play miles better than that, cant be;ieve he still has another year at u-21 level as well. Havent seen the scoring charts for div 2 but id imagine he's near the top of that as well. Very level-headed lad as well, zero ego! Ros are lucky to have a player of this calibre.

Indeed, There are a few players I would put in his calibre at his age i.e. McBrearty who was a phenomenon, Comer from Galway and Colm O Neill of Cork (at u21). Id rate Murtagh higher than Kilkenny of Dublin ( I am biased but to me he is that good).

Your comments may all be true Rosfan but you are doing Diarmuid no favours in spinning this kind of thread.

What are you saying? Is he going to read this and suddenly turn out to be a bad player? Are other teams going to rad this and think "we will double mark him"? I am only putting a thread up about a fantastic young footballer.

Ridiculous stuff posted here.heard it all before. The pressure put on Donie SMITH is similar. Just let the lad play some ball

Top drawer player no doubt. All star awards depends on the rise of Roscommon football really and how long there summers last!! Unfortunately the all stars are really picked from the last 4. Dessie moane is the best example of this ridiculous selection process. Diarmuid is top drawer and hopefully he gets all that is deserved.

nothing wrong in fans talking about a player that has huge potential

Its a forum for GAA discussion. What's wrong with discussing a young players talent. Its not like people will suddenly cop on to his ability and he'll be finished as a player.

Came on in the first half and got a few points to steady the game and give the momentum back to us. As I said, sheer quality!

Murtagh is top class but I think Enda Smith is a better all round player. Having a great season winning Sigerson Cup with DCU too

Very level headed and one of the nicest lads you can meet. Has taken to senior level like a duck to water. Our best corner forward since Frankie Dolan however hopefully he will have a longer inter county career than Frankie did.

Injuries and more injures. Did his posterior cruciate in June came back too soon in club action only to be ruled out till Feb. Pulled quadricep is the current injury he has he's still only 26 a injury free run would be welcome change for him.

Let the young guys be judged on their merits. Many an underage "star" has fallen by the wayside. Let them enjoy football.....theres enough pressure without expectancy.

Think some of these young Roscommon lads will do very well in Div 1 next year. If they have a full deck to pick from Roscommon have every chance of staying up

While it is good to see the Rossies doing well and the work obviously has gone in the pressure will mount. Rossies and Galway have shared the last 6 Connacht u21 titles (Ros 4 Galway 2) yet Galway won 2 all-Irelands and the Rossies have yet to win one. This could be the year. I know it is not all about underage but u21 is not a bad indicator. Interestingly Galway have been missing 1/3 of their likely championship team (4 Corofin starters and Tom Flynn) until the win over Ros when the Corofin boys were back . This has been kind of over looked and it is fair game that the Rossies are now seen as the main threat to Mayo. There are green shoots emerging in galway with Shane Walsh coming back into for. On Murtagh he is an outstanding talent but believe me Damien Comer is also well worth the praise. This guy has it all. It should be a close Connnacht championship.
