That is a good article shaggy, thanks for providing the link. Some excellent footballers on there, hard to believe some of them have never won one. It shows that even the strongest counties can have lads who are very unlucky.

To be fair, there aren't that many surprises on that list. Brilliant players like Glynn and Galvin were always going to be unlikely recipients given the sides they played for, while several others were decent enough players but little more than that.

There are some great players on there for sure but there are many more who were just as good. Longford's Dessie Barry is one that springs to mind.

Ross Munnelly should be on that list. Can't believe Meehan didn't win one in 08

Not sure why the names of the 2 Meath players were removed from my post (Harnan and Coyle). All I said that they were decent enough players, but never even among the best half dozen in their own county, nevermind hard done by for all-stars. A fair enough opinion to hold, Id've thought.

Sherlock is a surprise as he was integral to Dublin winning in 95. He was a great bitta stuff back in that era.

Dara O'Cinneade is another person there that is a surprising non-recipient.

I think Munnelly was/is a decent player but for me has never scored enough from play and isn't a goal threat.

To be honest I don't really get the All-Stars. The only medals that matter aren't given out in October!!!

Galvin (Limerick) and O'Hara (Sligo) brilliant all their careers. Either could carry a team.

Kevin Cahill. A class act but played around the same time as Darren Fay and Davy Dalton, two class players themselves.

O'Hara got one in 2002

JayP , Munnelly scored 5 points from play on a losing team v Dublin this year . Almost beat Dublin on his own in 05 , and has scored goals in two leinster finals , which very few players in Leinster bar Dubs have done recently .

MaloneMagic...... Don't get me wrong. Munnelly is a fine player. But I suppose All-Stars are given out from what happens from the quarter finals on usually. Like if we are honest Connolly is the best player in the country, but because Kerry won the All Ireland and O'Donaghue starred in the quarters and two semis and had an average enough final, he was bound to get it.

Munnelly has never had a good 3/4 games in the championship where 3 were a Leinster Final, quarter Final and a losing semi.

Its just easier to give All Stars to the winners.

As I said, I don't get the All Stars really.

Depends on the years of the awards. Cahill would surely have had one in '96 but for the fact that Darren Fay was playing great stuff and was one of the greatest full backs of all time. Cafferkey won one in 2012 and I don't rate him as a fullback but he hadn't much competition. Munnelly has been Laois's best forward by miles for a while now. Depends on who he's up against year on year for the all star. Could have a great season but other forwards been better that year. But if he had the same performance in another season he'd be guaranteed an award. Same with Sherlock. Munnelly and Sherlock are/were two classy forwards and they were match winners and more than a bit unlucky not to get picked.

The system can be a bit flawed too at times. Peter Canavan getting the Hall of Fame All Star springs to mind! We should have new threads - Best 15 of the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s. Pick more consistently good players rather than lads with a couple of good seasons.

Fair point JayP. Im biased anyways , but he has carried our team on his back for years . Also I agree it was ridiculous Connelly wasn't player of year . Michael Meehan is still the one that strikes me most . Injuries I guess .

As a meath man i'm amazed Harnan doesn't have one. Mick Lyons got a lot of plaudits down the years but by god he got some protection from Harnan in front of him. The '89 Leinster final proved how vital Harnan was to us when Dublin tore down the 6 channel becuase they knew Harnan wasn't there to stop them.

All stars have been redundant for years now anyways.

Michael Meehan in my eyes was/is a class player that day in Kerry 08 he nearly beat us on his own, what a player. Second best footballer in Ireland in his prime only the Gooch was better.

Meehan would have had he being fit..

Dara O'Cinneide was never a great player imo.

Munnelly indeed,he should be on the list.

But again, the All Stars don't really interest me,it is all about the team.If your team does well, you will get All-Stars,if not,you won't.
