Mast/base station at your club

(Oldest Posts First)

Has anyone's club had a base station erected at their club? Is it worth the hassle? Are there any pitfalls we should avoid if the idea gets some traction?

Any info would be appreciated.

Club near where I live has one, St.Peregrines, Dublin 15. There were a few objections from locals at the time but as far as I'm aware came to nothing

Lucan Sarsfields have one disguised as a tree on their 12th Lock grounds, hard to spot it.

Anyone aware of the issues with planning permission or the income benefits from having one?

A club in Kildare have one atop one of their floodlights. They have made according to their ex Chairman 100,000 from it over the last 10 years.

Cully I would imagine it would all depend on how close your grounds are to local housing, how much of a demand there is from local people for improved mobile coverage, and how much opposition there is likely to be to any planning application from locals. While mobile operators have paid big money in the past on rent, these days the sums paid tend to be much smaller, but would be a great help to clubs finances still. But when you think about the number of Grab All Association jibes there are on here, then you can imagine how many there will be from people in the local area, especially if the mast is thought to spoil views or the bogus health claims are brought out.

So Soma, are you stating for fact that they there is no health issues associated with these masts in the vicinity of houses, people and that any such health issues that are brought up are bogus?

lilywhite as far as I know in science and medicine you can not prove a negative so it is impossible for anyone to state as a fact that masts etc do not cause any health issues. However, all the tests done to date by reputable sources indicate no link between masts and ill health. The bogus claims I was referring to was the numerous incidents of people living beside masts claiming they have increased numbers of headaches, ringing in their ears etc, despite the mast not being operational and only installed as a control for an experiment. There are many examples available if you wish to investigate it further. To be fair, I only posted in an effort to help the poster who asked the original question.

It would be madness for a club not to take the opportunity up if offered. Plenty of Clubs have a nice little bit of income coming in for practically nothing.

The whole health risk thing was much a do about nothing. I remember being at a protest meeting years ago and a certain individual claimed his headaches were so bad he had to travel from Tipperary the whole way to the hospital in wilton, Cork and he was 3 hours in the hospital before the headache pain subsided after a mast was turned on his area.

The operator representative pointed out how many masts he actually passed going to Cork to which the individual replied thats why it only went away in the hospital only for the rep to point out to him that there is actually more mobile phone equipment on the hospital roof than there is on the mast close to his house which is actually the case.

You may end up with one or two objecting but thats par for the course for anything in this country but the hysteria from years ago has died down completely.
