The lack of BBC coverage of GAA games this season was pathetic. This season there was only five Ulster Championship games shown?? Surely they should be making a better effort than this??
At the same time there are now are a proliferation of Ulster rugby games shown
Is there an agenda at play here?? In the recent Scottish referendum the BBC coverage made Fox News look an impartial broadcaster. Surely in the interests of fairness there should be a much higher level of GAA coverage??

To be honest id rather they pulled the plug on their feeble coverage, they aren't worthy of it. When you consider the reaction from Sky viewers from across the water its the BBC's loss anyway. Sky have fully embraced our games and can recognise its potential if marketed correctly. They show repeats, have hourly news coverage ahead of games and have hired several respected GAA people to add their knowledge. The BBC's attitude to GAA is we'll give you an hour here if there's nothing more important on like repeats of Eastenders, who really watches their coverage if there's a choice of stations anyway?

As far as I'm aware they only had the rights to show the same games that were on rte. Don't ask me why that is though. I agree with you though GAA coverage as a whole is pretty dismal on bbc.

But then if you start showing more GAA games it will eat in to the budget and they may not be able to show us the 12th Parades or make as many Oolster Scuts programmes which we all yearn for.
While it is ridiculous how little coverage they give to the GAA I don't really expect them to at this stage and have resigned myself to the fact that we are probably lucky that we even got to see 5 this year. The only time the BBC give decent coverage to the GAA is when there has been a brawl at a match at which point it becomes headline news.

They have to pay to broadcast the games, same as RTE and Sky. Maybe it's a budget constraint?
Per head of capita in the 6 counties would the rugby get more viewers than GAA as many from both communities would shout for Ulster wheras GAA audiences would be county driven and one community. I don't like saying community but don't know more PC terms!
I like the BBC coverage. Less rubbish talked during analysis.

Do you really need the BBC to show the games up north? I mean they never seemed to show much interest in it so let them off as far as I'm concerned.

Is there enough interest from people in BBC showing games? Don't they just show games that are already being shown live? Ulster Rugby games being shown live has nothing to do with this especially when they are very much desired by viewing public What fairness is determining more Gaelic football should be shown live on BBC?

Yes we do. Many places in the north don't have access to RTE in the North. It's fine for my homeplace in South Armagh but I can't get RTE in Belfast. Hurling areas such as Ballycastle are also unable to get RTE, and hurling is never shown on BBC.
RTE Player is also annoying, I can't access many of the programmes on it, including the Sunday Game, as they can't be shown in my region apparently.

Ormond there were only 5 GAA games shown this year. There are probably an average of 15-20 rugby games shown.
Jerome Quinn(former BBC presenter) said that the BBC top brass are pretty hostile to showing GAA matches is this acceptable??
Ulster rugby matches would be at least viewed in a luke warm manner by many Nationalists as the GAA wouldn't be popular with Unionists?? As such give both an equal level of tv coverage??
People have written into The Irish News about this issue complaining the GAA doesn't get fair coverage.

Well said JP I cant get access to RTE in Belfast either. RTE should put a transmitter in Belfast so that people have access to it.

Fair enough, point taken, if it's needed and in high enough demand then it certainly should be supplied.

Wouldn't it be great if BBC Northern Ireland sponsored the Ulster hurling championship or something?

BBC NI are a disgrace and their bias is obvious. Sinn Fein need to speak up in this regard. 5 GAA matches for the year a total joke. They should be showing at least 7 Ulster matches, 3 qualifiers, 2 AI quarters, 1 AI semi for both hurling and football and the final in both hurling and football.
That's still 4 less than what Ulster will get for Rugby alone. Not too much to ask but we know all too well the bias up north towards one side of the community.

Ach aye Brend, sure am I nae from the Glens whoor they hae jumped on oor dialekt and turned it in tae sum fancie language. As the man doon in the local said yin nicht when it was been spaken aboot - I heanae been tae school in a lot o years yet noo apparently I am bilingual.
(Why yes Brend old chap, sure I hail from the Glens where the local dialect has been hijacked and turned in to some new fancy language. As one of the natives of the area said one night when we were having a discussion about it in the local drinking establishment - I haven't been to school in a number of years yet apparently now I am bilingual)
Ormond - while it shouldn't be about comparing it to Rugby the fact is that there are still more people who are members (playing and non) of GAA clubs than Rugby clubs here in the North yet there are quite a lot of live Rugby games shown involving Ulster. If they were serious about representing all they could easily redress that balance by showing a few less Rugby games and sending the outside broadcast to cover a few more GAA games instead. But somehow I don't think this would ever be given any consideration.

Well said Jack Goff. Its also amazing how the BBC drops their coverage like a hot potato as soon as all the Ulster teams get knocked out. If they applied the same policy to football they would have stopped showing the World Cup at the group stage when England got knocked out!!
Irish Nationalists in the North wish to see the All Ireland football and hurling finals regardless which counties are playing in them!!!

Keeper that would be a good idea and show some commitment to hurling (their interest in hurling is even less than Gaelic football-and that's saying something)!!

Ormond I want them to show 20 matches a year. Parity with Ulster Rugby. That would be the full Ulster Championship matches, Ulster hurling final , 4 qualifiers, 2 quarter finals,2 football semi finals, one hurling semi and the All Ireland finals in hurling and football.

There's lots of things I want to REDANDBLACK but I'm not going to get them and I seriously doubt you're going to get BBC to show 20 Gaa matches a year, especially seen as how Sky are now in the equation.
