Who was the greatest Kerry player?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

We all know that Kerryshire has an incomparable record when it comes to winning All-Irelands. I'd just like to ask Hoganstanders who they believed was the shire's greatest.
Some will say The Gooch, others Jack O'Shea. Personally I reckon Mikey Sheehy was the most skilled and quick thinking of them all.

My favourite was The Horse. Himself and Hanahoe had some battles.

I suppose its only right to comment on the ones you saw in person, and although I'm very grateful for fact I managed to see the likes of Spillane and Jacko play in person, it was only at the very twlight of their careers in 1992 against Clare. So I'm only going to consider Kerry players from around 1997 on:

Even then in these last 17 years there has been so many great legends we have been fortunate to witness wearing the Green and Gold, its a monumental task. How do you pick from the likes of Gooch, Maurice Fitz, Mike McCarthy, Mike Frank, Tom O'Sullivan, the O'Se brothers, Galvin, Seamus Moynihan, Declan Crowley, Dara O'Cinneade and I'm leaving out half of the greats let alone considering new stars that are emerging in JOD etc.

Moynihan was a king and Galvin was the beating heart of the Kerry team for so long, but personally I'm going to go with Tomas. His the greatest Kerry player I've ever seen, a man who tormented the lives of every forward in Ireland at some point or another and someone always manage to read a game and find the space for a gut-busting score coming down the right touchline. Still can't believe his gone, against Galway the last day I kept expecting to see him power up the line to kick over a crucial score to steady the ship. A true Legend in a county full of them!

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, Maurice Fitzgerald jumped straight to mind so I'll stick with the great man.

In my time Jack O Shea was the most complete Kerry player I have seen followed very closely by Maurice Fitz.

Surprised you missed Kennelly Kerryrowz. He won tight dog rough games against Dubs, Roscommon, Cork, Offaly that you had no right to! Great player.

Mick O'Connell was the greatest Kerry footballer, played in the crucial area of midfield. Mick O'Connell was the complete player,a brilliant fielder of the ball, his catching was superb, intelligent play and kick passing with pin point accuracy. unselfish and a true team player,he was pure class. Mick is the king of Gaelic Football. Ní bheidh a leithéid i bpáirch na himeartha arís.
