GAA draft with '9 lives' ?

(Oldest Posts First)

With so much discussion recently on the disparity between different counties, should the championships and leagues, in both hurling and football,
use a draft system ? How about each team retains 9 of their home grown players, eligible under current rules, with all others put into a pool from which all
counties, starting with the weakest, then 2nd weakest etc, would begin to draft. On match day, the 15 players on the field could consist of say, a maximum of six,
drafted 'other county' stars. Counties would still have a 'natural' feel with the majority of players home grown, and the draft would make competitions
more exciting and competitive.

No.
Isnt needed and shouldn't happen. Don't think anyone especially the players would want this

Have you signed up for GAAGO? The bookies have the Munster runners-up the odds on favourites to make the quarter-finals.

Congrats on the Muns final. I am very disappointed with the Rebels - honestly, I didn't rate Kerry and could bet the farm on Cork beating them - and instead, you give us the biggest
hiding during my life time - cork haven't changed much in underwhelming since those three softs goals you got against us in that AI Final - when was that again - best forgotten.
Are hou on the same with Dr No ?

No way could this ever work in an amateur game.

An awful idea and imagine players playing against their own counties. Never will happen. Not enough is being done in weaker counties at underage level and that's IMO is a big problem.

My draft idea would be strange but competition would be exciting - nothing wrong with players playing against their own county - it didn't bother those coaching - e.g. Mick O'Dwyer

I don't have any issue with players playing against their native county but not in a draft system like you suggest.
Coaching is very different to playing so isn't relevant to this. is it?

To S Goldrick -

My idea is obviously hypothetical - we make up as we go along - let's say drafted for 3 yrs ? - prob best that a player doesn't wear a different shirt each year - or say a max of being drafted by no more than 2 counties over whole playing career ?

If ye want to promote football in an area, just set up a hurling club there first. The big ball guys wont be long targeting the area then :)
