Tomsmith here

The news is that Brian Mc Eniff will return to Donegal . It appears that Donegal is looking for a man who can steady the ship in choppy waters and that the smart money is on Mc Eniff who has vast experience in management.

Whoever it is, I hope they let MM play ball before its too late. OK, he has an AI medal, thankfully, but all those other years playing the role he has must be soul destroying.

Think time is running out on MM. 28 next year and not so much his age but the amount of football he has played is the problem. As you say he has the Celtic Cross thankfully.

Also has 3 senior club championship medals with the Glen which mean as much to him as the Celtic Cross I would say.

Cop yourself on, Murph is as strong as a horse, so you reckon your an old man now at 28? the man has 5 or 6 years at least left at intercounty level, if he does stay inside more towards the end of his career so much the better but I'd say the man would even play in goal he loves this county so much, we'll never see the likes of him again that's for sure,
maybe he'll take over the management when Mc Eniff retires at 80!!

That would be some story if he came back for round 3 or would it be his 4th time as the manager? I think he had a spell before the all-Ireland winning one and another since then about 10 - 15 years ago.

One thing is for sure, he owes Donegal football nothing.

He's a big heavy set man who i feel will get a year or 2 more at midfield. My opinion. Wear and tare around the hamstrings and hips will effect mobility. Fellas like Johnny Doyle, Kildare and Brian Dooher, Tyrone, were light and wiry and played inter county up to 36. By 30 MM will be full forward more i feel. He looks like he's ageing prematurely for 27. More like a man of 40 in appearance. Fellas like Shefflin in hurling were a good 3 stone lighter too. Fellas built like Brian Murray of the 1980s and 1990s Donegal tend to slow down more quickly in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, a standout player of his generation, but he can't sustain his levels of performance since he was a teenager.

Good job i'm down here in my Laois stronghold as i feel all Tír Chonaill is going to be after me!!

Look i admire MM greatly. He's probably the most complete footballer of the last 10 years. But like the way Paul Flynn has slowed down for the Dubs, and John O'Loughlin at 27 for Laois has gone quite immobile due to his physique (nickname man mountain), i don't see MM exerting a huge influence in midfield in the years to come. A player of his skills and intellect will have a role up to 32 or 33 (5 more years) however, but i feel in a different role.

Neilly Gallagher's natural decline and retirement probably set Donegal back more than the retirement of any other player, bar maybe McFadden. As Murphy had to take up more and more of a role at midfield. Gallagher was an unsung hero in 2012.

Aye big Neil was a massive loss. While his ball winning and physical attributes were what people primarily noticed, he also had a very underrated football brain. He knew how to control the tempo of a game from midfield by slowing things down when needed. Also when to surprise the opposition by firing in long, high early ball into Murphy.

Murphy is too honest a lad for his own good sometimes. He'd play in goals for Donegal if he was asked. Hopefully with the new manager, some system can be developed that lessens his workload and we can see Murphy return to the full forward line on a permanent basis.

MM is a great role model. Remember him sympathising with Liam O'Neill on the death of his sister before raising Sam in 2012. Mature beyond his years at 22.

Great, honest player. Hope i'm wrong and he stays at peak level. The change of management is badly needed. Donegal still probably the county best placed to break into (back into) the top 4. Very good underage talent. I wouldn't mind the big beating from Galway. 2010 against Cork was the same and it had no longterm effects, bar good ones! Dublin had the 'startled earwig' beating v Kerry in 2009 and in 2 yrs they beat the team who inflicted that beating in an All-Ire final. Ye beat Cork in 2012.

Sometimes a good beating is better than a 1 point one as it brings about change. With a one point one everyone says we could have won only this that and the other.

This is a nothing thread. More talk about Murphy than a manager who never was going for the job anyway. Foolish, not even a bit funny.

I would argue with the natural decline bit. It was injuries not decline in big Neil's case but a massive player for Donegal. I also think Christy Toye has been a big loss this year too.

I think it could be his 5th or 6th time in charge. Sure bar mcguinness's time in charge, mceniff had a hand in all of donegal a Ulster wins and their first all Ireland!
