Kilkenny embark on the All-Ireland SHC qualifiers on Saturday evening when they welcome 3/1 outsiders Limerick. Could their be a shock on the cards in this one? Administrator (None) - Posts: 2274 - 27/06/2017 11:10:59 2006214 Link 0 |
No more safety nets now and I'd expect this to be a cracking game. catch22 (USA) - Posts: 2148 - 27/06/2017 11:53:14 2006234 Link 0 |
We have always been able to raise our game against Kilkenny. What we haven't been able to do is finish them off. 2012 was a prime example, just a point down at half time after Henry Shefflin had given an exhibition (Tom Condon had done pretty well on him) and playing with the wind in the second half. TJ Reid came on for the injured Richie Power and next thing we were 12 points down. As long as I'm watching Limerick hurling, we have been able to put it up to them, but beating them is another matter. My first time seeing the teams play was the 1983 NHL Final when again we hit them with everything we had and lost 2-14 to 2-12. slayer (Limerick) - Posts: 6480 - 27/06/2017 12:15:31 2006242 Link 0 |
It goes without saying that Kilkenny are favourites for this game. Since the 2014 semi final when we went toe to toe with them in a great match we've declined badly. We were very poor against Clare and got caught badly for 2of their goals. skillet (Limerick) - Posts: 1062 - 27/06/2017 13:26:13 2006279 Link 0 |
From Tipp perspective if KK come out of a close game still fighting it will smell danger for the rest of us. Unfortunately I've seen nothing to suggest Limerick will win this. I'm hoping they do but I'm not convinced unfortunately and KK could gain a lot of confidence from this and Cody will learn from it should they win. I'd expect to see KK's big players back in their best positions. Walsh at 5, C Buckley at 7 and Fogarty at midfield. KK won't go anywhere putting square pegs in round holes and all the evidence to date suggests the changes have been a disaster. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 27/06/2017 13:38:11 2006291 Link 0 |
If Wexford can do it so can Limerick! keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 27/06/2017 13:38:42 2006292 Link 0 |
Yeah agree 100% it's far from a foregone conclusion. If Hogan is effectively playing through injury with Mick Fennelly, Aylward and Padraig Walsh nowhere near match fitness either then Kilkenny are extremely vulnerable. From a Limerick point of view, 2014 should give them the motivation required. They really should have been Kilkenny that day and they know it too. Oddly enough they have done very little since that day and that performance. Kilkenny are definitely on the ropes. If they make it to Quarter finals it will be good going by them. That said it is Kilkenny after all and home advantage is huge. This seems to be the only one of the 4 games with a thread started on and rightfully so. I hope Limerick throw caution to the wind and go for it. They always have the talent. The under 21 match last week is a good example of that. The last few meetings between the teams suggest that while Limerick will battle hard and put it up to Kilkenny, they will come up short. I would love to be proven wrong but I think that deep down, the Limerick players don't believe they can beat the cats. Slayer mentioned the 2012 quarter-final. Everyone expected a ferocious backlash from Kilkenny that day after they were hammered by Galway in the Leinster final but for the first 20 minutes they were very jittery and they made a litany of basic errors that you would normally never see from Kilkenny. It was clear that their confidence had been severely dented by the Galway game and if Limerick had played with real conviction from the start, they would have had the game won by half-time. That game was a glorious opportunity for Limerick and they did not take it because they did not really believe in themselves. I fear it will be the same story this time. Limerick are still in transition since 2014 they would have won all Ireland if they bate KK. WildPundit (Tipperary) - Posts: 1709 - 27/06/2017 14:48:19 2006343 Link 0 |
Would you expect all of Tipp, Waterford, Wexford, Clare, Cork and Galway to easily beat KK then? By your estimation we are already KO'd if they are on the ropes. Don't write them off just yet tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 27/06/2017 15:23:37 2006360 Link 0 |
Limerick will throw the kitchen sink Kilkenny will absorb it up and then Limerick will concede either a soft goal or a goal against the run of play. Usually how I have seen these games go. grellans89 (Galway) - Posts: 257 - 27/06/2017 15:55:10 2006378 Link 0 |
I would never dare to underestimate Kilkenny especially with Cody in charge. But the injuries they are carrying is huge. Hogan, Fennelly and Walsh are three of Kilkenny's most important players. Aylward is another good player too. You can't expect Reid, Buckley and the two Murphys to do it all on their own. Killarney.87 (Tipperary) - Posts: 2513 - 27/06/2017 17:48:46 2006433 Link 0 |
I take your point but do you remember the performance they came up with in Thurles only a few months ago and they were under strength then. Going to Wexford park was always going to be a difficult test. If they beat Limerick then we won't know where they are until they play Tipp or Waterford. I still see them in a semi final at the least to be honest if Cody stops shuffling lads all over the place

While it's difficult to contemplate Kilkenny losing a championship match in Nowlan Park, they are vulnerable right now. Limerick need to really go for it without any fear. keeper7 (Longford) - Posts: 4088 - 30/06/2017 15:08:41 2008004 Link 0 |
I think Limerick have a chance here...in fairness none of their establishe forwards (Graham Mulcahy among others) never got going or into the game against Clare)...Kilkenny will be expected to bounce back but I wouldn't write of Limerick...if they get it together they are good on their day and might have the legs on Kilkenny if its a close game...
