In 2013, the AFL played its first regular season match overseas (in New Zealand). This year, there will be another. omahant (USA) - Posts: 2535 - 22/04/2017 15:25:52 1981676 Link 0 |
I think the width might be a bit tight? I'd be interested if Gold Coast were playing, a chance to see Pierce Hanley play in Croke Park even if it isn't for us!

I should have been clearer in my post above - this year's game is in unmentioned China - and spell- ''their' game. omahant (USA) - Posts: 2535 - 22/04/2017 17:40:51 1981707 Link 0 |
Eire? Why not just say Ireland? ormondbannerman (Clare) - Posts: 13473 - 22/04/2017 20:30:15 1981755 Link 0 |
Maybe because we are Irish and many Irish people prefer to refer to our country by its Irish name. Rather than the name the English gave it. Have you a problem with Eire? Jack_Goff (Meath) - Posts: 2920 - 23/04/2017 18:46:43 1981933 Link 2 |
Here's the science bit... Eire / Ireland are official names alright, but Eire has colonial connotations. The British Government didn't want to refer to "Ireland" when they just meant the 26 counties, as it meant the whole island including the North, so instead they referred to the 26 counties as Eire. The irony being that Eire still means the Island of Ireland, so they were actually paying us a compliment by still referring to whole Island and as gaeilge. county man (Limerick) - Posts: 1102 - 23/04/2017 22:21:41 1982005 Link 2 |
How much would you expect to see at a game like that? Croke Park would be too big. LohansRedHelmet (Clare) - Posts: 2432 - 24/04/2017 01:40:08 1982046 Link 0 |

Aren't those games played to Cricket dimensions. If yes CP is out. Still something I'd like to see in flesh. Much better than American Football which has an inexplicable growth over here. RoyalBadger (Meath) - Posts: 571 - 24/04/2017 08:52:17 1982076 Link 0 |
Not a bad sport at all. Just takes a very long time for the game to end !

Exactly. You'd need a cricket pitch to have the dimensions. I'd say for all the people that would go to an AFL match there are a few cricket pitches around that could hold it. Rathmines, Malahide, Belfast (Stormont I think its called) AFL are interested in money and spreading their game. I doubt Ireland would be a market they would target. Even if they came this side of the planet for an exhibition it would be sure to be in London where there are heaps of Ozzies living. himachechy (Donegal) - Posts: 293 - 24/04/2017 12:57:13 1982187 Link 0 |
Think the minimum width of the oval for AFL needs to be 110m so yeah it would need to be a cricket pitch. Malahide expanded to 10,000 with temporary seating a few years back for a couple of games, would probably be the best option if it ever happened. Can't see it ever happening though. The oval in London has regularly hosted exhibition games. HandballRef (Donegal) - Posts: 520 - 24/04/2017 14:05:44 1982213 Link 0 |
they have played a number of exhibition games in London over the years, was at one a few years back Freemantle and Port Adelaide I believe, played at the Oval.
