He totally deserves it usual ridiculous amounts of scorces and passes few even dare to try. Leadership throughout the year was immense and far above the other two nominees mentioned. His selfless attitude, targeted in every game for treatment but demonstrates continually he plays for a cause greater than one individual (Austin take note) grellans89 (Galway) - Posts: 257 - 20/09/2017 13:09:43 2048546 Link 1 |

Ya Barron and Moran had poor years alright!! I take it you didn't watch too many Waterford games?

I dont think anyone would say he hasn't done amazing things for Galway in this years Championship. The general consensus is that other players did more though - and as a result deserve to be at least nominated. Jamie Barron should get the award based on the shortlist. By right, it should be Gearoid. Ban (Westmeath) - Posts: 1410 - 20/09/2017 13:44:34 2048564 Link 1 |
Your Joe crusade is starting to sound a bit irrational. Aren't you the same poster who in an earlier instalment of your 'Canning is crap' series named Lee Chin as a superior forward because he scored more from play this year? Chin scored five points from play in four games. Canning scored ten from play in five games. Like I said, irrational stuff.

Joe will get it as a kind of career reward rather than on the basis of this year alone I imagine. I have a suspicion that McInerney was left off the shortlist as it would have split the Galway vote. Instead there are 2 Waterford players and Joe. That said Galway would not have won the All-Ireland without him. Quiet against Wexford but he injured himself in the final training session before the Leinster final. Gutted through the Wexford game at half-speed before taking a few weeks off. Scored Galway's last 5 points in the semi against Tipp. And scored 0-2 from play, a sideline ball and nailed all his frees in the final. I didn't count all his assists but he had a fair few of those as well. I think he's had better years but it was still pretty good going from him. Show me where I said Chin scored more. The idea of these forums is to express an opinion and mine is that Jamie Barron is hurler of the year. He done more in Extra time against KK than any other player in the country done in 70 mins.

By the way, the idea of allowing replies to a post is to comment on the actual post of the other person. You haven't answered my question.... Does he deserve it more than any of the players mentioned? He's a top class free taker and a top class hurler but this year hasn't been his best year I don't see any logic to say this is his best year in a Galway jersey...

Relax a bit, it's only an hour or two since my post. I'm not seated at the computer 24/7 reading Hoganstand. And not sure why you think you have to give me a lesson on the nature of the forum... Anyway, I took the trouble of tracking your post about Chin and I quote, "To be perfectly honest I didn't think Mahoney done enough this year but he was close alright. H Himself and chin were certainly two men that played in that position to score well from play unlike bonner and canning." Now, I'll do the pedantic bit for you - you didn't actually say Chin scored 'more'. But to say he 'scored well from play unlike Bonner and Canning'? Five points from four games is 'scoring well from play' and superior to ten points from five games??? I rest my case. Yes, I do think he deserves it this year. Other posters have largely stated why. For the record, I thought his second half semi-final performance against the All Ireland champions when the game was really in the balance was the most magnificent individual input of the year, with all due respect to others who were undoubtedly outstanding in extra-time against KK or whenever. Watching him that day, I thought it was the perfect embodiment of the phrase, 'cometh the hour, cometh the man'. marooney (Galway) - Posts: 88 - 20/09/2017 17:30:19 2048670 Link 5 |
Yes yes yes and there is not a player on the Galway team that would be grudge him. Your dislike for galway is quite evident. If you get a chance to listen to a play back check out Sean Walsh commentary of the all Ireland semi final against Tipp when canning scored that winning point he was described as the HIGH KING OF GALWAY and that's what he is.

Tommy Doyle was outstanding for Westmeath. Because Westmeath were knocked out early, he did not feature in today's nominations. James Dempsey from my own county is a top class keeper, but also wasn't nominated. The Allstars are decided on the All Ireland Finals and semi finals teams. A pity the outstanding players in the less prominent teams are overlooked when deciding All Star nominations. thelongridge (Offaly) - Posts: 1706 - 20/09/2017 19:10:00 2048718 Link 0 |
Ridiculous statement.

Shane Dooley scored 2-3 from play when Offaly beat Westmeath in the Leinster championship and was fouled for a penalty he converted. As far as I know Doyle was marking him that day. Dooley is an excellent forward but it's hard to say a player deserves an All-Star nomination if 1 of his 2 championship outings (excluding qualifiers) went so poorly for him. Surely the last thing hurlers from counties like Westmeath need is tokenism and hollow praise?

I think Big Joe was definitely in the shortlist and his value to Galway has been so subtle that it nearly went unnoticed. Killarney.87 (Tipperary) - Posts: 2513 - 20/09/2017 19:19:56 2048723 Link 0 |
I am in no doubt that the Tipp posters have a dislike for Galway. Whelan was Magnificent all year . In the Final he was man marked yet drew his marker out to the corners scored a good point etc.

Last year we had the farce where Gleeson won it and nearly everyone agrees he shouldn't, they said the tipp vote was split (for me Maher was player of the year last year).....im guessing they didn't want any chance of that this year so that's why only joe was put up. For what it's worth I think Barron was outstanding this year and brilliant all year round and deserves it, wouldn't disagree with canning getting it though, he stepped up when needed most but not as good as Barron overall. tipp11 (Tipperary) - Posts: 353 - 20/09/2017 20:11:20 2048760 Link 0 |
Barron is all them things but still his direct opponent was man of the match in the biggest game of the year. That would surely count against him when deciding hurler of the year.

I think he is a very good hurler and should win an All-Star but not hurler of the year. McInerney, David Burke, and Canning were all better than him this year. I think the problem with HOTY is there is a bias against backs. You have to be of the quality of JJ Delaney or Tommy Walsh to win it as a back which is wrong. I agree with the other Tipp poster, my pick last year would have been Padraic Maher and I think McInerney would have been a great choice this year or Barron. Its madness that McInerney didn't get shortlisted. Killarney.87 (Tipperary) - Posts: 2513 - 20/09/2017 20:43:34 2048778 Link 0 |
When is it tokenism, that is a bloody stupid comment. In that game in Mullingar, Shane Dooley's scores were caused by goalkeeping errors by Westmeath's keeper. Anyone who was at the game saw that Shane got very little from Tommy Doyle. The scores came late in the game. Tommy Doyle held Seamie Callinan scoreless in the qualifier games Tipperary. Callinan is one of the best forwards in the game. Some of the best players in the game play with the less successful counties. Tokenism my posterior! thelongridge (Offaly) - Posts: 1706 - 20/09/2017 20:47:28 2048782 Link 1 |
