Kevin McKernan believes the Down County Board have made the right decision in reappointing Eamonn Burns as senior footballer manager.

The Mourne County endured a year to forget but, speaking to The Irish News, the outgoing captain said: "It's out of the players' hands how things are dealt with, but we'd be happy to have Eamonn in next year.

"No-one wanted the season to go the way it did but at the end of the day the players are the ones who put in the commitment, so there'll be that want there from the players to get back at it and rectify that from last year.

"We knew it was going to be difficult. For some of the performances we put in during the League we were disappointed not to get a win, and to go into the Championship the way we did...

"Eamonn probably had his hands tied a wee bit in how late he was appointed, so everything will be ready to go for next season. He has plenty of time to plan and put in place what he wants and then get the players in place early in the season when we're ready to go."
