Derry and Tyrone have enjoyed one of the GAA's keenest rivalries since their first championship meeting in 1906.

Since that first Ulster SFC encounter in Strabane, which Derry won a 1-2 to 0-3 scoreline, there has been little to choose between the neighbouring counties in 29 further championship meetings. Tyrone have won this fixture 15 times, Derry 14 times, while there was one draw in 2003 (the Red Hands won the replay by 0-17 to 1-5). So if Derry win this afternoon, the counties will be tied on 15 wins each.

Surprisingly, this will be only the second ever Derry-Tyrone championship clash at Celtic Park. The previous encounter at the city venue in 1992 resulted in a 1-10 to 1-7 victory for the Oak Leafers. Derry's only championship defeat on home soil to the O'Neill County came in 1984 when they lost 3-4 to 1-13 in Ballinascreen.
