Damian Barton was full of praise for the Derry defence after Saturday night's narrow win over Cavan.

With two wins from two, the Oak Leafers are on course for a quick return to Division 1 and their manager enthused in the Irish Daily Star: "I thought all our men at the back were superb, but especially those in the full back line.

"Cavan threw everything they could at us in the last 10 minutes, but we stood firm, particularly in the last five minutes when we made five tremendous blocks.

"The way we defended at the death epitomises the spirit in this Derry team."

His Cavan counterpart Terry Hyland lamented: "We had too many wides in the first half and there was goal chances too that we didn't take, so that's something we will have to work on in the next three weeks.

"In fairness to the lads up front, I thought we had a couple of decent shouts for penalties late on that went unanswered. It was the same the last time out against Tyrone."
