Flags were flown at half mast at John Mitchel's GAA Club in Claudy yesterday in honour of the late Conall McKeever.
The 25-year-old, who died after a night out in the city with his friends, had represented his close-knit club alongside seven cousins in the Derry IFC at Owenbeg on Friday night.
"Conall wasn't just a club member but he was a very active club member, as was his entire family. The Kerrigans have been at the heart of Claudy GAA for years. We've about 700 members so, in a small village like Claudy, that impacts on nearly every family," chairman Tom O'Kane told The Irish News.
"Conall was a member of our senior panel which played in the intermediate championship on Friday evening. About 11 of the boys went out then on Saturday into the Metro in Derry as they often did and Conall was with them.
"No-one knows for sure what happened after that. There were two groups and one group thought Conall was with the others and so on."
The club also posted a heartfelt message on its Facebook page, which has been inundated with tributes and expressions of sympathy from clubs from around the county: "Conall was a huge character, full of craic and a good friend to his peers. His passing hurts us all. There are just no words that will make sense of this."
