Glen2Glen Cycle: On Sunday 13th September 2015 we are hosting another Glen2Glen Cycle, this time starting in Glen and finishing in Glen after a tour of South Derry. Our chosen charities this year are both local and very worthy - The Fort Centre (Riding School for the Disabled) and Charis Integrated Cancer Care. Registration costs £20 which will cover the cost of a specially commissioned jersey. Please download the registration form of the website and return to Eamon Convery, Sean Keane, Conor Molloy or Gene Devlin. Each cyclist is asked to raise a minimum of £150 sponsorship. After donations to both charities all the funds will be assigned to the provision of new floodlights for the top playing pitch. The new custom cycling jersey has been designed and is away to print, thanks to all those who provided sponsorship. We are now actively seeking families / individuals to sponsor £100 for each mile of the cycle. If not approached in coming weeks, please contact one of the organising committee.
Under 14 Championship: Well Done to our U14 footballers who made the journey to Ballymaguigan on Tuesday evening 18th August to take on competition favourites Magherafelt in the U14A championship. It was indeed the favourites who settled quickly and made several blistering attacks which resulted in two early points along with several wides. The Glen defence had their hands full during the early exchanges with the full-back line of Fearghal McGahon, John Convery, Dara McGill and the half-back line of Tiarnan Higgins, James Turner, Jody McDermot working tirelessly to chase, tackle, close down and block the very mobile and disciplined Magherafelt forward outfit. The Glen midfield of Cathair Glass and man-of-the-match Seamus McKenna then started to get into their stride, working well to claim kick-outs from Jordan Convery and move the ball quickly to centre half forward Ethan Doherty. It was Ethan who scored Glen's first goal after a speculative long free-kick towards the square which ended up in the back of the net giving Glen the lead. The next ten minutes was Glen's best spell, with Caolan Johnstone and Odhran Craig working hard to slow down the opposition's half-back line and energetic forwards Conleth McGuckian and Adam McGonigle assisting Ethan in bringing the game to Magherafelt. Driven on by the outstanding athleticism and workrate of Seamus McKenna in midfield, the strength and energy of half forward Ethan Doherty and the intelligent movement and scoring threat from Conleth McGuckian, Glen matched the intensity and skill of the Magherafelt team with the game moving from end to end and both teams defending and attacking in equal measure. Glen registered another 2 goals and five points during the first half, from both Conleth and Ethan, with the half time score level at 3:4 to 2:7. The second half started as the first with Magherafelt enjoying more possession and Glen's defence having to work hard as a unit. However, with Magherafelt pushing forward and closing down our placed kick-outs, they had built up a 5-point lead going into the final ten minutes. The young Wattys showed great determination to again get back in the game and were rewarded with a well worked Conleth McGuckian point to bring the deficit to four. As the momentum swung, Ethan Doherty fired a low shot to the net and with time running out and Cathair Glass and Jody McDermot both displaying some tremendous fielding skills, Glen threatened to grab victory with some last gasp lobs into the Magherafelt goalmouth and hurried attempts for scores. Unfortunately, the final efforts were not enough to defeat an impressive and skilful Magherafelt team who ended our U14 championship hopes for the second consecutive year, this time on a score-line of 2:12 to 4:5. A huge Thank You must go to this young Watty team on a very committed performance and indeed for all their efforts throughout the league season. Thank You also to those parents, family members and disappointingly very small number of Watty supporters who made the short trip to Ballymaguigan. I'm sure all will agree that the entertainment and excitement on offer from our own up-and-coming players was likely not equalled at any other venue in Derry last Tuesday evening.
