Tiernan McCann has been issued an eight-week ban for his theatrical dive in Saturday's All-Ireland quarter-final, which led to the sending off of Monaghan's Darren Hughes.

Hughes appeared to ruffle McCann's hair before the Tyrone forward threw himself to the ground.

The Irish Independent reports this morning that the Central Competition Controls Committee have proposed the two-month suspension, with Tyrone county board having received the communication yesterday.

McCann is understood to have been cited under the rule that governs discrediting the association and it is believed that he will seek a personal hearing.

As things stand, he will miss the Red Hands' All-Ireland SFC semi-final with Kerry on August 23 and the final should Mickey Harte's side upset the Kingdom.

Harte has already rushed to the defence of his player, describing him as "a fine young man, a wonder footballer", and claimed that he was not entirely to blame of the incident which led to Hughes' dismissal.
