Senior Football: Glen made the short distance to Slaughtneil on Sunday for the first round of the league. Played in front of a big crowd and both sides short a number of regulars, Glen started brightly with a Danny Tallon point. Slaughtneil soon equalised but Glen went three points in front with points from Ryan Winton and two from Emmet Bradley. Slaughtneil got the next three scores, one from a free and two from play. Ciaran McFaul landed a monster free however the home side landed another three points. Two points from Emmet Bradley and Ryan Winton were sandwiched by a Slaughtneil point to leave the home side leading by a point at the break on a scoreline of Slaughtneil 0-08 to 0-07. Slaughtneil started the brighter upon the restart with three points however got themselves back in contention when Emmet Bradley fired to the net for the first goal of the game. Both sides had further goal chances that weren't capitalised on. Slaughtneil added a point however Emmet Bradley responded with another point. With one minute remaining Glen were one point in arrears however the home side added kicked the last two points to leave the final score Slaughtneil 0-14 Glen 1-08. An opening day defeat back in senior football but many positives to be taken from the game. Glen scores Emmet Bradley 1-04, Ciaran McFaul 0-01, Ryan Winton 0-02 & Danny Tallon 0-01. Next game is on Sunday at home to Coleraine.
Reserve Football: The reserve panel took on the current Derry Senior Reserve champions Slaughtneil, prior to the highly anticipated senior game. In a keenly contested first half it was Slaughtneil who were more efficient in the opening 15 minutes and they were 1-03 to no score up. Our lads then clicked into gear and were probably the better side for the remaining fifteen minutes and outscored the hosts in that period by 6 points to 3 points. Half Time Score: Slaughtneil 1-06 Glen 0-06. The first half points coming from Connlan Bradley (3), Mark O'Donnell (2) and Cathal Mulholland. Despite a nip and tuck opening 5 minutes to the second half Slaughtneil soon took hold of the game and ran out comfortable winners with an inept display by the majority of our lads giving them a huge helping hand. Paul Gunning the only scorer for the Watty's in that second half period scoring 2 points. Full Time Score: Slaughtneil 2-15 Glen 0-08. Team & Scorers: Aodhan McGrath, Declan Brolly, Conor McDevitt, Colm Sargent, Cathal Mulholland (0-01), Connor Carville, Damien Maguire, Marc Cudden, Connlan Bradley (0-03), Ryan Bradley, Seanny McGroggan, Michael Gormley, Paul Gunning (0-02), Mark O'Donnell (0-02), Shay Gormley. Subs: Ryan Martin for Connor Carville, Kevin McErlean for Cathal Mulholland, Blaine O'Donnell. The next game is at Watty Park v Coleraine this Sunday 19th April at 2pm. All support welcome.
Championship Draws: The draws for the 2015 reserve & senior football championships were made on Tuesday evening in Owenbeg. The reserves will face Swatragh on Wednesday 6th August and the seniors have been pitted against Bellaghy with the scheduled senior championship dates being Thursday, July 23rd to Sunday 26th July inclusive.
Camogie: Glen travelled to Banagher for their first league game of the season on Thursday evening. This is a new look Glen team due to some of last year's players retiring and also work commitments and injury. This forced the management to field a very young and inexperienced team. Banagher have just come down from division 1 so a tough task lay ahead for our young players. Banagher got off to a brighter start scoring 1-1 before Caoimhe Glass pointed from play. The home side added a further 3 points 2 from play and one from a 45m free. Catherine McKenna replied with a point from play. The final score of the half was another pointed 45m free leaving the half time score Glen 0-2 Banagher 1-5. Naimh Gallagher entered the fray at half time and scored a good point in reply to Banagher's first score of the half. Despite the hard work of the young players and a few missed chances Banagher scored a further 2-1 before Naimh Gallagher pointed a long range free. The performance of the referee left a lot to be desired and Glen frees were at a premium despite some over enthusiastic tackling by the north Derry side. Banagher increased the lead by 1-4 before Glen hit a purple patch and hit 3 goals without reply, the scorers were Caoimhe Glass, a hand passed goal by Leanne McCrystal and a penalty by Naimh Gallagher. Banagher hit back with a lucky goal but another young subs Meabh McGirr scored a fine point from play. Banagher did have the last say with a pointed free leaving the final score Glen 3-5 Banagher 5-12. Despite the scoreline there were a lot of positives from this game with so many girls playing their first senior camogie match and they will not face any tougher physical battle than this throughout the year. The girls face Derryloughlin next Thursday at home and hopefully will have all their players available for selection. Get along and support them. Team and scorers: Ciarrai Convery, Amy Glasgow, Rebecca Ferguson, Ciara Mulholland, Hannah Ferguson, Clare McGroggan, Nuala Convery, Caoimhe Glass(1-1), Catherine McKenna(0-1), Fiona Glasgow, Naimh McKenna, Caoimhe Mulholland, Michaela Craig, Leanne McCrystal (1-0), Rachel Glasgow, subs Naimh Gallagher (1-2), Roisin McCabe & Meabh McGirr(0-1), Aoife McGuckian & Danielle McCrystal.
Ladies Football: All County Ladies Minor Football league Round 5. After an excellent win last week at home to the previously unbeaten Moneyglass, Glen travelled to Moneymore in need of another 2 points to keep themselves at the top of the league table. Glen started in a very positive manner with the first 2 attacks leading to goals through corner forward Bronagh McNicholl. Moneymore then hit back with a goal and a point of their own and could have scored more only for some excellent goalkeeping from Rachel Glasgow who made three point black saves to keep Glen in the game. Claire McGroggan then switched to midfield and her presence in the middle helped Glen gain dominance in this sector and helped Glen moved the ball to their dangerous full forward line. McNicholl helped herself to another goal after an excellent pass from Aine Carlin. The influential McGroggan hit an excellent point, corner forward Ciara Gallagher hit a quick-fire 1-01, McNicholl got her fourth goal and Brenna O'Loughlin hit her first point of the half to leave Glen in a commanding half time lead. Half time: Moneymore 1-02 Glen 5-02. Glen were hit with a blow at half time with the referee having made a mistake in his score keeping. He had a different half time score recorded as being Moneymore 2-02 Glen 4-02. This meant the Glen half time lead had incorrectly halved and Glen now found themselves playing against a considerable wind. Brenna O'Loughlin got the first score of the second half but Moneymore hit back through a goal from their midfielder. They followed that up with another goal to leave the minimum between the sides. Moneymore then hit the next point to leave the sides "level". Moneymore were on top for the first 20 minutes of the second half and Glen could have found themselves in a much worse position if it wouldn't have been for the excellent work in defence of the full back line of McKenna and Glasgow. They were very ably supported by their half back line of McCloskey and McGuigan but particular mention must go to half back Caoimhe Mulholland who seemed to cover every blade of grass on the pitch. The Moneymore siege was lifted by a Claire McGroggan point after some excellent work from Orla Higgins. Disaster then struck for Glen with Moneymore getting a goal and leaving them in the lead by two points with only 3 minutes remaining. Lauren O'Loughlin won the resulting kick out and she made a fine sole run with the ball and then drove the ball forward to McNicholl who was fouled in the parallelogram and a penalty was awarded to Glen. Brenna O'Loughlin then stepped forward and drove the ball to the back of the net to leave Glen one point up. Glen then won the next two kick outs and worked the ball to Brenna O'Loughlin who hit two excellent points to leave Glen the winners by three. Full Time: Moneymore 5-04 Glen 5-07. Glen squad and scorers: R Glasgow, D McKenna, A Glasgow, Caoimhe Mulholland, A McGuigan, S McCloskey, L O'Loughlin, O Higgins, C McGroggan (0-02), A Carlin, B McNicholl (4-00), L Kelly (1-01), B O'Loughlin (1-04), C Gallagher (1-01).
