HL2A: Derry hang on in London

March 01, 2015

Derry's Liam Hinphey. INPHO

Derry 1-10
London 1-9

Derry withstood a late London onslaught in Greenford to maintain their unbeaten record in Division 2A of the Allianz Hurling League.

When Liam Og Hinphey netted with 10 minutes remaining to give them a 1-10 to 1-4 lead, the Oak Leafers looked to be home and hosed, but the plucky Exiles reeled off five unanswered points in the closing stages to leave the minimum in it. However, Derry held on for their second win, to go with their first draw in Kerry.

The visitors looked as though they would run away with it when scores from Ruairi Convery and Tiernan McCloskey eased them into a 0-8 to 0-1 lead before Martin Duggan brought London back into it with a goal.

Derry took a 0-9 to 1-1 lead into the break and Convery extended their advantage with his fifth point immediately after the restart. But London cut the gap to three thanks to scores from Tadhg Healy and Michael Ivor before Hinphey's goal gave the Ulstermen some breathing space again.

But their backs were to the wall for the remainder of the game as scores from Peter Phelan (three), goalkeeper James Barrett and sub Eoin Chawke ensured a nail-biting finish.
