Derry manager Brian McIver is adamant that the Dr McKenna Cup has its benefits.

Some people on GAA circles feel that the early season competitions are of no benefit to counties as this time of year.

However, McIver vehemently disagrees with that sentiment and he stressed to the County Derry Post that the Dr McKenna Cup had its uses.

"From our perspective we want to get a look at the lads that we had trialled. We ended up with an under-21 squad in our last game," said McIver.

"I know conditions weren't great and it's a real hassle to get a pitch to play these games but it does serve its purpose. If you weren't playing challenge McKenna Cup matches, you'd be playing challenge matches. You can't go into the National League without some football behind you. It doesn't help leading into the league."
