Derry secretary calls for "change in attitude"

'Give Respect, Get Respect.'

Derry secretary Danny Scullion has appealed to players and clubs in the county to show respect to referees and match officials.

In his annual report, Scullion stresses the need for better conduct after this year's Derry SFC final ended in disgraceful scenes following Slaughtneil's late winning goal against Ballinderry. The Shamrocks received a number of sanctions from the Derry CCC, including a 48-week ban for Aaron Devlin after he posted an abusive post on twitter.

"I have to comment that the level of sportsmanship shown at times at our games throughout the year left a lot to be desired," the county secretary wrote.

"There were instances when referees, match officials, stewards and members of the county board were verbally and physically abused. For the good of Gaelic games, the attitude of some players, mentors and clubs needs to change and be more supportive of the governing bodies.

"The members of the Competitions Control Committee and the Hearings Committee have collectively an onerous task in administering our competitions, including appeals and investigations. These, often, can be thankless tasks and I wish to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of the officers concerned."
