Slaughtneil defender Barry McGuigan is hoping that the long treks home can pay off.

McGuigan works in the U.K where he is based in Southend, but he travels home every Thursday evening for training and games as Slaughtneil's remarkable year continues.

The Derry champions are in the Ulster final where they will face Omagh in the decider and the former county player is making huge sacrifices to be part of the squad.

"I'm working in England and training on my own, so it's been a tough enough year. Home every Thursday night for training and a match. I've been at that over a year now," McGuigan told the County Derry Post.

"This means more to me than anything. I'd day I will be over there long term. Hopefully, things are going well. I thought it would have been easier to be honest. I thought being out there I'd have a pile of free time on my hands.

"I don't take a drink or anything, so that doesn't bother me. I thought I'd be wile to get out and do a bit of training, but it hasn't just worked out like that."
