GAA director-general Paraic Duffy says players who post derogatory tweets that are directly related to the Association run the risk of being sanctioned.

Duffy's warning comes after the Derry CCC's landmark decision to ban Aaron Devlin for 48 weeks following comments he made about match officials on social media in the wake of Ballinderry's controversial county final defeat to Slaughtneil.

"If you are a GAA player and you are talking about things that happen within the GAA then I think you are answerable," Duffy said at the launch of Sportsfile's 'A Season of Sundays'.

"We have had incidents before where players tweeted comments that had nothing to do with the GAA in any shape or form.

"We can't do anything about that. Everyone has their own personal life. But within the GAA if you make comments about the GAA and about other members of the GAA then we are all answerable. There's no avoiding that."

The Monaghan man also admitted that the future of the International Rules series is on the line when Ireland face Australia in Perth in 10 days' time.

"I don't want to use the term make-or-break but it is hugely important," he continued.

"If we have another poor game... I don't think it will be one-sided, but it is important it is a good game so that people see it has potential.

"It needs a good game as never before. If it turned out to be a very one-sided game or worse, is played in a bad spirit, I think it would be very damaging to its future.

"I don't want to say it's the last chance or make-or-break but it is probably the most important game in recent years of the series."
