Michael Davitt GAC Swatragh club notes

August 18, 2014
The tickets for annual All Ireland getaway are now on sale. The first prize is a weekend for two in a top Dublin hotel for two nights with tickets for an All Ireland final of your choice. The second prize is also a weekend for two in Dublin for either the hurling or football final (dependent of what the first prize winner decides). Tickets are available at £5 each from all club members. Most club members will have received 20 tickets to sell and we would urge all members to make the maximum effort to sell these tickets. With the club about to undergo the first stage of tarmacing of the grounds costing £70,000 a massive effort is required to maximise fund raising. Each family has been allocated 20 tickets so please sell your quota (and more!).

The senior footballers negotiated their way into the next round of the championship with workman like victory against Foreglen at O'Cahan Park, Dungiven. A long range effort from Diarmuid Dillon opened the Davitts account but a succession of wides looked like it would cost Swatragh as they played with the wind advantage in the first half. But five quick fire points were scored by Francis Kearney, Thomas Og Gunning, Liam Kearney, Eugene McGuckin and a Ruairi Convery free to leave Swatragh 0-06 to no score. Foreglen opened their account in the 20th minute and tagged another score before Big R pointed from play to leave the score 0-07 to 0-02. A dominant third quarter against the breeze saw the Davitts outscore Foreglen three points to one with Big R scoring twice (one free) and James Kearney converting from the deadball. Foreglen managed to tag on a few consolation scores before they had a man sent off for striking to leave the final score 0-10 to 0-06.

The minor footballers progressed to the semi finals of their championship after defeating Slaughtneil in a keenly contested affair in Kilrea. The Emmetts got off to the brighter start leading 3-1 after ten minutes with Swatragh score coming from the lively Fintan McGurk. The Davitts managed to control the remainder of the half and reeled of 5 unanswered excellent points from play by Francis Kearney, Fintan McGUrk, Niall McAtamney, Lorcan McWilliams and Fintan O'Kane. Slaughtneil managed to close the gap just before the interval to 0-07 to 0-05. A fiercely tight intense second half ensued as Swatragh managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over as Francis Kearney held his nerve with three deadballs. Fintan McQurk scored his third point from play with five minute to stretch Swatragh lead to four points. The Swatragh defence expertly held the potent Slaughtneil attack at bay and won out on a scoreline of 0-11 to 0-08. Next up is Glen in the semi final on Monday 25th August.

The U14 hurlers lost out to Kevin Lynches in the A final of their championship on Saturday past at Owenbeg. The young Davitts put up a great display, even though understrength, against the All Ireland champions who have went unbeaten throughout the season. Final score 2-14 to 1-04.

Underage football championship action over the next week starts on Wednesday night with unbeaten U12s up against a very formidable Lavey side in the quarter final of the A mini league at Lavey at 7pm. Next up is the U16s against Magherafelt on Thursday night in Desertmartin at 7.15pm. As mentioned previously the minor footballers play Glen on Monday 25th with a venue and time TBC. Please come along and support the next generation.

The club is hoping to organise a charity cycle in association with Carn Wheelers later in the year. There would be three routes involved with a novice, intermediate and experienced circuit to cover all levels of ability. We are aware that other clubs are organising their own cycle dates so we do not wish to clash. The initial date would be early September so that would give us 12 weeks to get organised. Please contact the club if you have any ideas or suggestions for dates and routes.

Club lotto numbers on Saturday past were 5,12,17 and 23. There were no jackpot winners but lucky dip winners were Tracy Mullen and Dearbhla Smyth. Jackpot currently stands at £3100. Bingo takes place every Sat night at 9pm with the jackpot at £2500 for 42 numbers.

Would you like to do the club lotto every week? Is there ever a week when you forget or are on holiday? How would you feel if that was the week your numbers came up? The jackpot has went twice in the last 4 months with both winners receiving at least £5000!!! Worry not, you can sign up for a standing order which means you don't have to fill out a slip every week but will still be entered and can use your same numbers without fear of ever forgetting them. Call into to club registrar Noel McGrath and he can sign you up in a matter of minutes.

The club shop is open in Mary O'Kane's shop on Main Street, Monday to Friday throughout the summer months.
