Under 14 Championship: In the U14 championship game at Lavey on Tuesday night, Glen faced stiff opposition in the form of Magherafelt - this year's All Ireland Feile semi-finalists. Glen got off to a good start with Alex Doherty pointing a free. This was soon to be followed by a goal from Jack McGilligan arising from a high ball lobbed into the goal mouth. However, this was the prelude to six unanswered points from our opponents as the O'Donovan Rossa boys started to get more into the game. Glen went on to point three frees before half-time with Magherafelt scoring the first of their goals.
The second half continued in the same exciting vein with both teams attacking and defending in equal measure. Glen went on to score three more goals and two points, two goals from the boot of Alex Doherty with the third worked to the back of the net by Eunan Mulholland. Nevertheless this impressive tally would not be enough to defeat the Derry Feile champions, who came out winners on a scoreline of 3:14 to 4:6. Overall, this was an impressive performance with strong contributions from every area of the pitch. This young Glen side show great promise for the years to come, well done to all.
Team & Subs: Caolan Convery, John Convery, Caolan Bradley, Cathair Glass, Conleth McGuckian, Jack McGilligan, James Turner, Seamus McKenna, Ciaran Clinghan, Eunan Mulholland, Alex Doherty, Ethan Doherty, Ryan Gallagher, Odhran Craig, Tiarnan Higgins, Euan McKenna, Jordan Convery, Shea Convery, Eoghan McGirr.
Minor Championship: On Monday past, our Minors travelled the short distance to Dean McGlinchey Park, Ballinascreen for the first round proper of the minor championship to take on the top of the league team and championship favourites Dungiven. Glen played with the aid of the considerable breeze in the opening period however it was Dungiven who got the first goal scoring chance when they were awarded a penalty. The resulting spot kick went high, hit the upright and back into safety. This miss spurred the Glen lads in action and soon grabbed points from the boots of Danny Tallon, Conor Glass, Shay McMath and Mark Doole (free). Then Danny Tallon was upended in the large square and he coolly blasted the subsequent penalty to the net past the replacement goal
keeper. It was one was traffic at this stage as Glen scored further points from Danny Tallon (3), Tiarnan Flanagan and Mark Doole. Half Time score Glen 1-09 Dungiven 0-02. With the wind at their backs in the second period, Dungiven came back strong and fired over three unanswered points to narrow the margin to seven points. Cathal Mulholland then steadied the nerves when he blasted to the net and then followed up with another point. Dungiven with some fine forwards on show continued to kick some great points however the game was killed as a contest when wing back Aidan Hughes got on the end of a fine move and fired to the top corner of the net. Cathal, Danny (free) and Tiarnan kicked further points before young Tiarnan McCusker score the last major of the game. Overall a much improved performance with the defence, midfield and forwards all putting in a great shift. Final score Glen 4-13 Dungiven 0-013. Glen will now play Swatragh in the semi-final.
Camogie Notes: The camogie club hosted a very successful U6 tournament on Saturday. 18 teams took part and all the girls had a great evening's camogie. The skill shown by all the teams was great for such young players. This shows the great work being done in the clubs around the county. All the children went home happy with their hard earned medal in their pockets. Congratulations to teams and management who took part. Well done to our own girls who played so well in all their games showing great determination and skill.
Thanks to the parents who provided the refreshments for all who attended and to those who spent the evening in the kitchen, well done to our young referees who took charge of the games and to anyone else who helped in the smooth running of the tournament. Camogie has a great future and it was great to see nearly 200 under 6 children enjoying our sport. Photos of the teams will be published next week and added to the website shortly.
Scor Notice: Could anyone that is interested in competing in the 2015 Scor na nOg competition please text me on 07756400317, leaving your name and the category that what you would like to participate in. Watty Graham's are the most successful club within the county when it comes to Scor and after the massive success we had last year with three entries in the Ulster Final of Scor na nOg and also three at the Scor Sinsear Ulster Final. Out of this we gained two Ulster titles one from each code and then the most prestigious award when Hannah Ferguson won the All Ireland .These medals at
the various grades - Derry, Ulster and All Ireland are as equivalent to the medals won on the playing on the field, so it's a great accomplishment when you receive one. If interested, please contact me before 25th August. Many thanks Louise (Cultural Officer).
